Groups and decision making.

Abstract

A hallmark of clinical service management in particular, and contemporary health care in general, is the team approach. Yet, many managers do not have appropriate background and skills for group leadership. This article reviews some essential characteristics of groups and suggests strategies for facilitating group decision making.

Sidestepping the altar.

Following several ugly corporate divorces, more hospitals and healthcare systems are deciding to drop their merger plans. They're realizing that it just doesn't make sense to make the trip to the altar, even after long courtships. "Mergers in and of themselves have not been a panacea," one analyst said. "In fact, the reality of mergers has pointed out a lot of shortcomings in the executions, or perhaps in the expectations."
