Attention for security now more needed than ever.

Abstract

Security is a major consideration for any computer system. Today the topic security is defined and divided in three different domains: confidentiality, integrity and availability. This paper deals with the topic availability and the fact that hospitals are getting more and more dependent of their computer systems In this contribution the different aspects of availability and non-availability are described and measures are mentioned to lower the risk of dysfunction in the hospital in case the system completely has collapsed for a longer period.

The pursuit theory of motion parallax.

Although motion parallax is closely associated with observer head movement, the underlying neural mechanism appears to rely on a pursuit-like eye movement signal to disambiguate perceived depth sign from the ambiguous retinal motion information [Naji, J. Eye movements provide the extra-retinal signal required for the perception of depth from motion parallax. Vision Research, 43, 1553-1562]. Here, we outline the evidence for a pursuit signal in motion parallax and propose a simple neural network model for how the pursuit theory of motion parallax might function within the visual system. The first experiment demonstrates the crucial role that an extra-retinal pursuit signal plays in the unambiguous perception of depth from motion parallax. The second experiment demonstrates that identical head movements can generate opposite depth percepts, and even ambiguous percepts, when the pursuit signal is altered. The pursuit theory of motion parallax provides a parsimonious explanation for all of these observations.

Ubiquitous computing to support co-located clinical teams: using the semiotics of physical objects in system design.

OBJECTIVES: Co-located teams often use material objects to communicate messages in collaboration. Modern desktop computing systems with abstract graphical user interface (GUIs) fail to support this material dimension of inter-personal communication. The aim of this study is to investigate how tangible user interfaces can be used in computer systems to better support collaborative routines among co-located clinical teams. METHODS: The semiotics of physical objects used in team collaboration was analyzed from data collected during 1 month of observations at an emergency room. The resulting set of communication patterns was used as a framework when designing an experimental system. Following the principles of augmented reality, physical objects were mapped into a physical user interface with the goal of maintaining the symbolic value of those objects. RESULTS: NOSTOS is an experimental ubiquitous computing environment that takes advantage of interaction devices integrated into the traditional clinical environment, including digital pens, walk-up displays, and a digital desk. The design uses familiar workplace tools to function as user interfaces to the computer in order to exploit established cognitive and collaborative routines. CONCLUSION: Paper-based tangible user interfaces and digital desks are promising technologies for co-located clinical teams. A key issue that needs to be solved before employing such solutions in practice is associated with limited feedback from the passive paper interfaces.

Visual assessment of angular response in medical liquid crystal displays.

In spite of having non-Lambertian emission, displays based on liquid crystal technology are becoming popular for medical diagnostic work stations. For all liquid crystal displays (LCDs), the contrast performance varies with viewing direction. Accurate measurements of the angular distribution of light emission require expensive instrumentation and extensive expertise. We investigated the possibility of using a test pattern to visually assess the angular response performance of LCDs. We found that this procedure offers the end user of displays a simple, fast, and relatively consistent technique to verify that the viewing angle performance of the display device is within certain acceptable limits.
