Consider a microcomputer.

Abstract

Although computers have proven to be effective tools in managing the administrative aspects of a medical group practice, many groups are hesitant to invest in this new technology. They are concerned about huge capital expenditures for equipment, the consequences of the implementation period, and failures that many groups are reported to have experienced in this endeavor. Microcomputers are a low-cost method through which a medical group can experiment with computerized information systems without taking the risk of total conversion from a manual to an automated system. The experience of the Sterling Heights Center in implementing a microcomputer is helpful to any group considering such a system.

Enhancing the quality of studies using transcranial magnetic and electrical stimulation with a new computer-controlled system.

Transcranial magnetic (TMS) and electrical (TES) stimulation of the human brain have become useful tools in neurophysiological and neuropsychological research. Here we describe an integrated system that allows experimental control, data recording and analysis of neurophysiological and neuropsychological TMS and TES procedures (including motor thresholds, recruitment curves, intracortical inhibition and facilitation with paired pulses). The system uses a multifunction input/output board and a set of virtual instruments (VI) programmed with the Labview graphical programming language. It also includes online curve fitting of recruitment curves using the Boltzmann sigmoid function and monitoring of the preinnervation grade of the target muscle. Modules for neuropsychological stimulus presentation or faster repetitive stimulation can be easily added. This system yields more accurate data recording and analysis in a user friendly and unified environment.

Economics. Does science drive the productivity train?

From the president on down, many are hailing science as the fuel for today's booming economy, and bigger research budgets are seen as essential to continued prosperity. But skeptics say the information technology revolution is overrated as a contributor to economic growth when compared to the truly society-shaking innovations of the past, such as electricity or the telephone. Even some science lobbyists worry that hitching basic research's star too closely to economic arguments could backfire, prompting legislators to take a firmer hand in guiding cash toward less risky projects that they believe will pay off big.
