Formaldehyde evaluation from endodontic materials.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to measure the amount of formaldehyde released from three types of endodontic sealing cement (AH-Plus, EZ-Fill, and AH-26). Formaldehyde release was analyzed using High Performance Liquid Chromatography, which could detect as low as 0.25 ppm. The data was tabulated after two runs. The two paste system of AH-Plus endodontic sealing cement had the least amount of formaldehyde release (0.00039%, 3.9 ppm). This was followed by EZ-Fill (0.054%, 540 ppm) endodontic cement and AH-26 (0.1347%, 1347 ppm) endodontic cement which yielded the greatest formaldehyde release. Both of these cements (EZ-Fill and AH-26 endodontic filling cements) are based on a powder-liquid mix. The relative minute amounts of formaldehyde released by the endodontic cements studied (AH-Plus and EZ-Fill) warrant their use as endodontic sealing cements.

Polymeric membrane ion-selective electrode for determination of bismuth (III) in pharmaceutical substances.

A PVC-based membrane of tridecylmethylammonium chloride reveals a Nernstian potentiometric response (with slope of 55 mV/decade and a correlation coefficient of 0.99) for complex of bismuth (III) with ethylenediaminetetraacetate-anion [Bi(EDTA)](-) over a wide concentration range (1 x 10(-1) to 3 x 10(-5) mol/l). The potential of this electrode is independent of pH in the range of 4.0-11.0. It has a fast response time of about 30 s and was used for a period of 3 months with good reproducibility. The detection limit of this membrane electrode was 1 x 10(-5) M. This sensor exhibits a very good selectivity for [Bi(EDTA)] over a wide variety of complex metal ions with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid. The proposed electrode has been used in the direct potentiometric monitoring of bismuth (III) in stomach anti-acids.

Determination of trace bismuth by flow injection-hydride generation collection-atomic absorption spectrometry.

Bismuth hydride gas was collected on-line and determined via a new flow injection-hydride generation collection-flame atomic absorption spectrometry system. The performance of the gas-liquid separator, hydride gas collection time, acidity of the sample solution, NaBH(4) concentration, and the effects of concomitant interferents were investigated to optimize the conditions of this new method. Interferences from concomitant elements were investigated, and recoveries of 94.7-105.3% for 10 ng mL(-1) Bi were obtained after the addition of 0.2% ascorbic acid-thiourea masking reagents. The sensitivity of this new method was one order of magnitude higher than the continuous flow-hydride generation-flame atomic absorption method with a detection limit of 0.25 ng mL(-1) and a precision of 2.3%. The method was evaluated by determining trace bismuth in standard biological reference material human hair GBW07601, and the results were consistent with the certified value. The proposed method was then employed to determine trace bismuth in ten colored gelatin samples; recoveries of 94.2-105.8% were obtained.
