Avoiding unreasonable reliance on subcontractor certification.

Abstract

Increasingly, subcontractors who provide products and services to device manufacturers are obtaining quality system certification. This is a laudable activity and should lead to improvements in the products and services being provided. However, some manufacturers place far too much reliance on this certification in their subcontractor assessment programmes. This article will discuss some of the dangers of this practice.

Changing the rules. With hospitals increasingly dissatisfied with the accreditation process and its high costs, the JCAHO overhauls its approach.

After years of criticism about the cost and relevance of its evaluations, the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations unveiled a strategy promising to drastically revise the accreditation process to produce improved measurement of patient care. Russell Massaro, a Joint Commission executive, says surveyors also will be trained to connect standards with the care processes they weigh.
