Tyrannical omnipotence in the archetypal father.

This paper sets the archetypal relationship between the tyrannical, devouring father and his sons in the context of a disjunction in the parental couple (syzygy) whereby the role of the maternal feminine is eclipsed and excluded. This is shown to originate in an omnipotent defence against infantile dependence on the mother. Successful liberation from the father's tyranny requires the restoration of mutuality between the internal couple. Although the main focus is on the internal world (and a detailed clinical illustration is given, showing the working out of this process in the analytical relationship), reference is also made to political tyranny, attitudes to the control of Nature by technological means and patriarchal forms of masculinity. The Chronos myth is amplified through the use of two modern variants in the films The Terminator and Star Wars.

Maternal employment and development of the father-infant relationship in the first year.

This study investigated links between maternal employment and fathers' parenting quality when their infants were 4 and 12 months old. Sixty-three fathers were videotaped interacting with their infants and completed questionnaires regarding their involvement in caregiving, parenting stress, and marital quality, and mothers reported on children's temperament. Fathers whose wives either did not work outside the home or worked part time were more sensitive and responsive to their children when they were more involved in caregiving; men whose wives worked full time exhibited more negative affect and behavior when they participated more in child care. Men whose wives were not employed also were more positive in their interactions when they were happier with their marriage, whereas men whose wives worked either part time or full time exhibited a negative relation between parenting behavior and marital quality. Maternal work circumstances were not related to fathers' parenting stress; rather, marital quality and child temperament predicted parenting stress at 4 and 12 months for all fathers.

Sudden infant death syndrome and early family interpersonal relationships.

The medical profession are concerned with diseases or disorders, their diagnoses, and the appropriate treatment of their patients. The relevant processes involve interpersonal relationships in physical examinations, associated with the conventional social ritual courtesies. There are only two certainties--birth and death--with areas of probabilities and uncertainties in between. One such uncertainty is the sudden death of an infant in its first year. After the obstetrical birth processes, the specific health of the neonate involves the paediatrician. His skill and modern technical resources have enabled numbers of the prematurely born to survive. Has the modern neonate evolved over the centuries to have some needs that must be worked out between mother and her baby? To attribute hands-on experiences to genes takes away four holding hands from what they feel, the eyeball movements and what they see, the noses and what they smell, and the breast milk for the energy to move the muscles no longer in floating weightlessness.
