QTL methodology for response curves on the basis of non-linear mixed models, with an illustration to senescence in potato.

The improvement of quantitative traits in plant breeding will in general benefit from a better understanding of the genetic basis underlying their development. In this paper, a QTL mapping strategy is presented for modelling the development of phenotypic traits over time. Traditionally, crop growth models are used to study development. We propose an integration of crop growth models and QTL models within the framework of non-linear mixed models. We illustrate our approach with a QTL model for leaf senescence in a diploid potato cross. Assuming a logistic progression of senescence in time, two curve parameters are modelled, slope and inflection point, as a function of QTLs. The final QTL model for our example data contained four QTLs, of which two affected the position of the inflection point, one the senescence progression-rate, and a final one both inflection point and rate.

A tunable multivariable nonlinear robust observer for biological systems.

This paper presents a robust nonlinear asymptotic observer with adjustable convergence rate with a great potential of applicability for biological systems in which the main state variables are difficult and expensive to measure or such measurements do not exist. This observer scheme is based on the classical asymptotic observer, which is modified to allow the tuning of the convergence rate. It is shown that the proposed observer provides fast and satisfactory estimates when facing load disturbances, system failures and parameter uncertainty while maintaining the excellent robustness and stability properties of the classical asymptotic observer. The implementation of the tunable observer is carried out by numerical simulations of a mathematical model of an anaerobic digestion process used for wastewater treatment. The key results are examined and further developed.

Quantum chaos meets coherent control.

Coherent control of atomic and molecular processes has been a rapidly developing field. Applications of coherent control to large and complex molecular systems are expected to encounter the effects of chaos in the underlying classical dynamics, i.e., quantum chaos. Hence, recent work has focused on examining control in model chaotic systems. This work is reviewed, with an emphasis on a variety of new quantum phenomena that are of interest to both areas of quantum chaos and coherent control.
