[Deltosides from Allium nutans L].

Abstract

Steroid glicoside which structure was elucidated by using mass-spectroscopic and NMR techniques, has been isolated using column chromatography on reverse-phase silicagel (C-18) from underground parts of Allium nutans. This compounds for the first time was isolated from the plants of genus Allium.

Saponins from Allium minutiflorum with antifungal activity.

Three saponins, named minutoside A (1), minutoside B (2), minutoside C (3), and two known sapogenins, alliogenin and neoagigenin, were isolated from the bulbs of Allium minutiflorum Regel. Elucidation of their structure was carried out by comprehensive spectroscopic analyses, including 2D NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. The structures of the new compounds were identified as (25R)-furost-2alpha,3beta,6beta,22alpha,26-pentaol 3-O-[beta-D-xylopyranosyl-(1-->3)-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1-->4)-O-beta-D-galactopyranosyl] 26-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside (1), (25S)-spirostan-2alpha,3beta,6beta-triol 3-O-beta-D-xylopyranosyl-(1-->3)-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1-->4)-O-beta-D-galactopyranoside (2), and (25R)-furost-2alpha,3beta,5alpha,6beta,22alpha,26-esaol 3-O-[beta-D-xylopyranosyl-(1-->3)-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1-->4)-O-beta-D-galactopyranosyl] 26-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside (3). The isolated compounds were evaluated for their antimicrobial activity. All the novel saponins showed a significant antifungal activity depending on their concentration and with the following rank: minutoside B>minutoside C>>minutoside A. No appreciable antibacterial activity was recorded. The possible role of these saponins in plant-microbe interactions is discussed.

Non-derivatized analysis of methiin and alliin in vegetables by capillary electrophoresis.

Methiin and alliin are important components of flavors or the precursors of flavors and odors of Allium vegetables. Moreover, they are thought to be beneficial to health. A non-derivative method was developed to analyze these compounds in vegetables by capillary electrophoresis. These compounds in the extracts of Allium and Brassica vegetables were detected indirectly at 225 nm. The analysis of each sample required less than 25 min, and the linear detection range was 5-5000 mg/l. This method was simple compared to the other published methods using high performance liquid chromatography. Moreover, it was possible to detect the peak of pyruvate simultaneously with methiin and alliin using this method. The presence of pyruvate peak is a useful indicator if the blanching of the samples has been insufficient.

Genotoxicity of five food preservatives tested on root tips of Allium cepa L.

The effects of the food preservatives sodium benzoate (SB), boric acid (BA), citric acid (CA), potassium citrate (PC) and sodium citrate (SC) have been studied on root tips of Allium cepa L. Roots of A. cepa were treated with a series of concentrations, ranging from 20 to 100 ppm for 5, 10 and 20 h. The results indicate that these food preservatives reduced mitotic division in A. cepa compared with the respective control. Mitotic index values were generally decreased with increasing concentrations and longer treatment times. Additionally, variations in the percentage of mitotic stages were observed. The total percentage of aberrations generally increased with increasing concentrations of these chemicals and the longer period of treatment. Different abnormal mitotic figures were observed in all mitotic phases. Among these abnormalities were anaphase bridges, C-mitosis, micronuclei, lagging, stickiness, breaks and unequal distribution.
