Abstract

A metod for measuring pressures exerted by denture bases against the supporting tissues during mastication which yields valid quantitative results was developed. Use of a specially designed diaphragm pressure transducer overcomes the disadvantages of a cantilever-beam arrangement which gave inaccurate results in earlier studies. On going research using this method was described. Several suggestions for additional applications of this method for prosthodontic research were presented.

Polymerization kinetics and mechanical characterization of new formulations of light-cured dental sealants.

The aim of the study was to develop and evaluate the in vitro performance of a new and simplified formulation of photocuring resin to be used as dental sealant. Two experimental dental sealants (CYTED1 and CYTED2) were formulated and their kinetic of polymerisation and physico-chemical properties were studied and compared to those of two commercially available sealants (Helioseal, Delton-FS). Rates of photoinitiated polymerisation (Rp), as well as the conversions and the quantum yields of polymerisation (phi(p)) were calculated. Flexural strength, Young's modulus, microhardness, microleakage, water sorption, and solubility were also tested. ANOVA, Student-Newman-Keuls, Pearson correlation and Kruskal-Wallis tests were used (p < 0.05). The highest Rp and phi(p) were obtained for the sealant CYTED2, Rp and phi(p) were similar for CYTEDl and Helioseal, and the lowest for Delton. Water sorption values were similar for Helioseal and CYTED2 being higher for CYTED1 and lower for Delton. No differences were found for solubility and microleakage values. Mechanical properties were better for Delton and no differences were found within the rest of the sealants. At short irradiation times (30 s), the maximum effectiveness of the photoinitiating system was obtained by the experimental CYTED2.

Stress analysis of endodontically treated anterior teeth restored with different types of post material.

Finite element analysis was performed to evaluate stress distribution in maxillary central incisors treated endodontically and restored with a post and an all-ceramic crown. Tensile stress at tooth root was analyzed using two-dimensional finite element models with different post diameters and lengths. One post length was 1/3 of the root (short), while the other was 2/3 of the root (long); one post diameter was 1/3 of the root (narrow), while the other was 2/3 of the root (wide). The following combinations were used for posts and cores: gold alloy cast post and core, commercial stainless steel post and resin core, and fiber post and resin core. Results showed that the fiber post produced less stress on the root dentin around the post tip than did the metal posts. This finding thus suggested that to reduce the stresses that cause root fracture, a long, thin fiber post should be used.

The influence of human plasma used for in vitro dentin perfusion on microtensile bond strength of 5 self-conditioning dentin adhesives.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of human plasma, compared to physiologic saline, on microtensile bond strengths of 5 self-conditioning dentin adhesives when used as a dentin perfusion medium. METHOD AND MATERIALS: One hundred and fifty extracted human third molars were prepared in a special manner allowing the simulation of intrapulpal pressure and dentin perfusion. The specimens were randomly divided into 10 experimental groups. Five groups were perfused with physiologic saline, while the others were perfused with diluted human plasma, each under constant hydrostatic pressure of 30 cm H2O. One saline group and 1 human plasma group was then assigned to each of the following dentin adhesives: Clearfil SE Bond (Kuraray), Clearfil Protect Bond (Kuraray), Xeno 3 (Dentsply), Futurabond NR (Voco), and iBond (Heraeus Kulzer). The microtensile bond strength for each group was evaluated using a Zwick universal testing machine 10 minutes after light curing. RESULTS: Pairwise comparison showed a significant increase of bond strength in all human plasma-perfused subgroups (P < .05, Tukey's test). The influence of the different dentin adhesives was significant (P < .001, analysis of variance). The highest significant values were observed for Futurabond NR and iBond with human plasma (P < .05, closed test procedure). CONCLUSION: The use of human plasma might be a suitable alternative to imitate perfused dentin conditions in testing devices and might eliminate the discrepancy between different in vitro investigations focusing on bond strength of dentin adhesives.
