Developmental complexities of simple leaves.

Abstract

Recent papers have explored early events in the development of simple leaves. Functional compartmentalization of the shoot apical meristem correlates with distinct fields of cells connected by plasmodesmata. Molecules important in the initiation of phyllotactic pattern are described and the relationship between dorsoventral patterning and lateral leaf expansion is investigated.

Plant architecture: a dynamic, multilevel and comprehensive approach to plant form, structure and ontogeny.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The architecture of a plant depends on the nature and relative arrangement of each of its parts; it is, at any given time, the expression of an equilibrium between endogenous growth processes and exogenous constraints exerted by the environment. The aim of architectural analysis is, by means of observation and sometimes experimentation, to identify and understand these endogenous processes and to separate them from the plasticity of their expression resulting from external influences. SCOPE: Using the identification of several morphological criteria and considering the plant as a whole, from germination to death, architectural analysis is essentially a detailed, multilevel, comprehensive and dynamic approach to plant development. Despite their recent origin, architectural concepts and analysis methods provide a powerful tool for studying plant form and ontogeny. Completed by precise morphological observations and appropriated quantitative methods of analysis, recent researches in this field have greatly increased our understanding of plant structure and development and have led to the establishment of a real conceptual and methodological framework for plant form and structure analysis and representation. This paper is a summarized update of current knowledge on plant architecture and morphology; its implication and possible role in various aspects of modern plant biology is also discussed.

The first neurons of the human cerebral cortex.

We describe a distinctive, widespread population of neurons situated beneath the pial surface of the human embryonic forebrain even before complete closure of the neural tube. These 'predecessor' cells include the first neurons seen in the primordium of the cerebral cortex, before the onset of local neurogenesis. Morphological analysis, combined with the study of centrosome location, regional transcription factors and patterns of mitosis and neurogenesis, indicates that predecessor cells invade the cortical primordium by tangential migration from the subpallium. These neurons, described here for the first time, precede all other known cell types of the developing cortex.

Interactions between pattern formation and domain growth.

In this paper we develop a theoretical framework for investigating pattern formation in biological systems for which the tissue on which the spatial pattern resides is growing at a rate which is itself regulated by the diffusible chemicals that establish the spatial pattern. We present numerical simulations for two cases of interest, namely exponential domain growth and chemically controlled growth. Our analysis reveals that for domains undergoing rapid exponential growth dilution effects associated with domain growth influence both the spatial patterns that emerge and the concentration of chemicals present in the domain. In the latter case, there is complex interplay between the effects of the chemicals on the domain size and the influence of the domain size on the formation of patterns. The nature of these interactions is revealed by a weakly nonlinear analysis of the full system. This yields a pair of nonlinear equations for the amplitude of the spatial pattern and the domain size. The domain is found to grow (or shrink) at a rate that depends quadratically on the pattern amplitude, the particular functional forms used to model the local tissue growth rate and the kinetics of the two diffusible species dictating the resulting behaviour.
