[Postcontusion glaucoma].

Abstract

Secondary posttraumatic glaucoma. Blunt ocular trauma may cause transient or permanent high IOP, occurring immediately or in time after the injury. This study presents some clinical and therapeutical considerations about 16 cases which developed secondary glaucoma. The elevation of IOP was associated with hyphema, iridodialysis, zonular tears (with lens luxation or subluxations), alterations of the iridocorneal angle.

Elemental mercury poisoning in a family of seven.

Mercury poisoning in children is rare but may have devastating health consequences when exposure is unrecognized. Mercury occurs in three forms: elemental, inorganic, and organic. Elemental mercury (Hg(0)) vapor may become volatile following an accidental spill and may be readily absorbed from the lungs. The following case study describes how the poison center, health department, physicians, and others worked together to treat a family with long-term exposure to elemental mercury vapor in the home. Identification and prevention of this type of exposure in the community are discussed.

Drug-related emergencies and drug-related deaths in Vienna, 1995-1997.

The demographics of drug-related emergencies and drug-related deaths that occurred in Vienna between January 1st, 1995 and December 31st, 1997 were compared to investigate whether they represent two different subgroups of the drug-taking community. Analysis indicated that drug-related emergencies were significantly younger and that the proportion of females was higher than amongst the fatalities. In addition, emergencies were more likely than fatalities to occur in private residences than public places. No significant association between the number of contacts with the Vienna Ambulance Service and the fatal outcome of drug use could be substantiated. The results of this study indicate that drug-related emergencies and drug-related deaths represent two different subpopulations of the drug-taking community. Therefore, different strategies of prevention are considered.

Burn injuries caused by a hair-dryer--an unusual case of child abuse.

About 1.4-26% burn injuries in children appear to be abusive in origin. A 2.5-year-old girl was referred to our institute because of suspected child abuse. Clinical examination and later interrogation of the mother revealed non-recent deep second degree burn injuries on both gluteal regions, caused by the partner of the mother by pressing a hand-held hair-dryer against the skin. The authors present the findings of this unusual method of child abuse.
