Integrated hospitals need a central planning and control system to plan patients' processes and the required capacity. Given the changes in healthcare one can ask the question what type of information systems can best support these healthcare delivery organizations. We focus in this review on the potential of enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems for healthcare delivery organizations. First ERP systems are explained. An overview is then presented of the characteristics of the planning process in hospital environments. Problems with ERP that are due to the special characteristics of healthcare are presented. The situations in which ERP can or cannot be used are discussed. It is suggested to divide hospitals in a part that is concerned only with deterministic processes and a part that is concerned with non-deterministic processes. ERP can be very useful for planning and controlling the deterministic processes.
This paper looks at the health care benefits and services administered by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. It examines management strategies adopted within the department to allocate resources, structure benefits, and improve quality. Some recommendations made by the General Accounting Office and the President's Task Force to Improve Health Care Delivery for Our Nation's Veterans are reviewed, in particular the emphasis of the latter on increased collaboration with the Department of Defense. Long-term proposals to balance service commitments and financing also are considered.
A Nottingham GP is working with local government colleagues to secure funding for well-being initiatives. Trust in one's GP has been identified as a key factor in social cohesion, and primary care can play a significant role in healing fragmented communities. Several PCTs are using the GMS contract to bring practices together and provide a wider and more integrated service.
