A tomographic test object.

Abstract

Testing of the tomographic and photographic system is a prerequisite for successful reproduction of minor details particularly in tomography of the temporal bone. A test phantom has been developed, consisting of a single layer of small metal balls which can be adjusted to varying inclinations to the tomographic plane. It involves a simple procedure for examining the homogeneity and stability of the tomographic layer at wide movement angles and may also be used for calculating the layer thickness.

AAPM tutorial. CT image detail and noise.

Two important characteristics of the computed tomographic (CT) image that affect the ability to visualize anatomic structures and pathologic features are blur and noise. Increased blurring reduces the visibility of small objects (image detail); increased visual noise reduces the visibility of low-contrast objects. Sources of blurring in CT include the size of the sampling aperture (which can be regulated by the focal spot size and the detector size), the size of the voxels, and the reconstruction filter selected. Noise is caused by the variation in attenuation coefficients between voxels. Use of small voxels and edge-enhancing filters helps reduce blurring and improve visibility of fine details. However, small voxels absorb fewer photons and therefore result in increased noise. Noise can be reduced by using large voxels, increasing radiation dose, or using a smoothing filter, but this filter increases blurring. An optimized protocol for a specific clinical study must take these physical principles into account and be adjusted to give proper balance among detail, low noise, and patient exposure.

High-resolution digital teleradiology: a perspective.

Teleradiology has come a long way, from analog transmission systems using slow-scan television over standard telephone lines, to present-day, commercially available, microcomputer-based, low-resolution teleradiology systems. However, there exists a need to address the high-resolution end of the medical imaging categories, namely chest radiographs and mammograms, to firmly establish teleradiology. The availability of high-resolution image digitizers, display units, and digital hard copiers has made high-resolution digital teleradiology a feasible concept. Although the use of satellite channels can speed up the transmission of radiographic image data, with widespread acceptance of high-resolution teleradiology systems in the foreseeable future, the sheer amount of data involved in this field will give rise to problems of data transmission and storage. Data compression schemes can bring down the amount of data handled and can have a great economic impact on future teleradiology systems. We have developed a number of compression techniques for reversible compression of medical images. Our experiments have shown that lossless compression of the order of 4:1 is possible for a class of high-resolution medical images. Use of pattern recognition techniques offers the potential to bring down these data rates even further. We plan to use these techniques in a prototype high-resolution teleradiology system being developed. In this paper, we trace some of the developments in teleradiology and image data compression, and present a perspective for teleradiology in the 1990s.
