Abstract

A proposed specification covering handling characteristics and physical and chemical properties of bone cement composed primarily of methyl methacrylate has been prepared on the basis of data from the authors' studies and from various other sources. Under handling characteristics, requirements included relate to dough, handling and setting time, proper plasticity for insertion and temperature rise on setting. Mechanical properties specified include compressive strength and indentation and recovery characteristics. Maximum limits are proposed for water sorption and solubility. Suggested packaging requirements are also included.

Gamma-radiation-induced changes in structure and properties of tetracalcium phosphate and its derived calcium phosphate cement.

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the gamma-radiation effect on the structure and properties of the single-phase tetracalcium phosphate (TTCP) powder and its derived calcium phosphate cement (CPC). Experimental results show that low-dosed (0-30 kGy) CPC has a setting time of 10-12 min, while high-dosed (40-120 kGy) CPC has a setting time of 8-10 min. The low dose gamma-radiation does not significantly change porosity volume fraction or compressive strength of the CPC. The pH values of all CPC samples fell in a relatively narrow band, with a band width of 8.5-9.1 (in terms of pH value). With a dose of 10 or 20 kGy gamma-radiation, the TTCP-apatite conversion ratio does not change much. With 30 kGy the conversion ratio significantly increases and reaches a maximum value. With further increases in dose, the conversion ratio quickly declines. With increasing gamma-ray dose, the CPC morphology becomes more porous/loose and apatite particles become larger in size. When exposed to a high dose (120 kGy) of gamma-radiation, TTCP structure is radiation-damaged, and gamma-ray-induced formation of apatite is confirmed by transmission electron microscopic/selected-area diffraction/lattice imaging analyses.

Influence of initial component temperature on the apparent viscosity and handling characteristics of acrylic (PMMA) bone cement.

The flow and polymerization characteristics of poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) bone cement can be changed by manipulating the temperature of the bone cement components or the environment that they are prepared in. To quantify the effects of the initial component temperature (T(ic)) of acrylic bone cement on the rheological and handling characteristics, ASTM F451-99a compliant methods and clinically relevant testing methods were utilized. A rheometer was designed and fabricated using the dimensions of a clinical, commercially available, cement gun and nozzle. The influence on the apparent viscosity and handling characteristics (setting time, working time, and peak exotherm temperature) for a high viscosity (HV) commercially-available acrylic bone cement, Palacos R, were determined. The values of T(ic) used were 23 degrees C (room), 6 degrees C (refrigerator), and -14 degrees C (freezer). Using the apparent viscosity of a medium viscosity (MV) bone cement as a benchmark (Simplex P at room temperature), it was found that by adjusting the T(ic) the HV cement was able to mimic the flow characteristics of the MV cement. Lowering the T(ic) lowered the apparent viscosity of the bone cement. The effects of T(ic) on the polymerization of bone cement were studied in dynamic and static conditions. The dynamic test recorded temperature and torque from stirring resistance. Setting times were also determined using the ASTM exotherm mold method. The setting times determined by the dynamic testing conditions were consistently shorter than those determined by the ASTM method. Lowering the T(ic) increased the working and setting times; however, it did not have a significant effect on the peak exotherm temperature.
