Solid phase chemical technologies for combinatorial chemistry.

Abstract

This article describes the exploration of synthetic methodologies on solid phase for combinatorial chemistry. Examples will cover various cyclisation strategies that include; the intramolecular Heck cyclisation leading to the formation of oxindoles, the radical cyclisation mechanism in the synthesis of furans, and a stereoselective cyclisation to form oxopiperazines.

Delta-viniferin, a resveratrol dehydrodimer: one of the major stilbenes synthesized by stressed grapevine leaves.

Delta-viniferin is a resveratrol dehydrodimer, an isomer of epsilon-viniferin. This compound has been reported as a molecule produced in vitro by the oxidative dimerization of resveratrol by plant peroxidases or fungal laccases. It was also recently identified in wines and in grape cell cultures. We have now identified this dimer by NMR, high-performance liquid chromatography-diode array detection (HPLC-DAD), and HPLC-mass spectrometry (MS) in grapevine leaves infected by Plasmopara viticola (downy mildew) or UV-C irradiated. Its concentration was higher than that of epsilon-viniferin and constitutes one of the most important phytoalexins derived from resveratrol.

Modeling the transport of PCDD/F compounds in a contaminated river and the possible influence of restoration dredging on calculated fluxes.

River Kymijoki, the fourth largest river in Finland, has been heavily polluted by pulp mill effluents as well as by chemical industry. Loading has been reduced considerably, although remains of past emissions still exist in river sediments. The sediments are highly contaminated with polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs), polychlorinated diphenyl ethers (PCDEs), and mercury originating from production of the chlorophenolic wood preservative (Ky-5) and other sources. The objective of this study was to simulate the transport of these PCDD/F compounds with a one-dimensional flow and transport model and to assess the impact of restoration dredging. Using the estimated trend in PCDD/F loading, downstream concentrations were calculated until 2020. If contaminated sediments are removed by dredging, the temporary increase of PCDD/F concentrations in downstream water and surface sediments will be within acceptable limits. Long-term predictions indicated only a minor decrease in surface sediment concentrations but a major decrease if the most contaminated sediments close to the emission source were removed. A more detailed assessment of the effects is suggested.

Influence of metallic chlorides on the formation of PCDD/Fs during low-temperature oxidation of carbon.

Experimental study was conducted to clarify the formation behavior of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) from carbonaceous materials through a de novo synthesis route. Samples were prepared by changing mixing method and composite state of metallic chloride in graphite powder in order to simulate the texture of "unburned carbonaceous particles", i.e., soot, formed in thermal processes. Reagents of KCl, CaCl2. 2H2O, FeCl3 x 6H2O, and CuCl2 x 2H2O were used as chlorine sources and were added to graphite powder with different methods. The composite state of metallic chloride was varied by preliminary treatments: hand-mixing, mixed-grinding using a high-intensity ball mill, and preheating at different temperatures between 500 and 1100 degrees C. In the de novo experiment, reaction temperature and oxygen concentration of flowed gas were set at 300 degrees C and 2.5 mol %, respectively. During the experiment, formation rates of CO and CO2 and the formed amounts of organic chlorine and PCDD/Fs were measured. The results show a reasonable relation between the amount of formed organic chlorine and oxidation rate of carbon, and the order of the activity of metallic chlorines was obtained as KCl < CaCl2 < FeCl3 << CuCl2. Furthermore, it was found that the effect of the composite state of metallic chloride on the formation of PCDD/Fs significantly depends on the kind of metal. The results will give useful information to examine the formation mechanism of PCDD/Fs from unburned carbon particles in thermal processes.
