"Function" with registration: simple, fast, and safe using a new registration material.

Abstract

Although the Function construction method with Cerec 2 always remained a method for enthusiastic experts, Cerec 3 enables the practiced "normal user" to use this method expediently. With the new R-Sl-LINE Metal-Bite registration material, an important step towards accelerating the process has been taken by eliminating a powder sequence and by its fast curing. Due to the special definition properties of the material, including the antagonist situation in the design of the occlusion has become considerably more reliable.

Design of actively shielded main magnets: an improved functional method.

An improved functional approach for designing MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) main magnets with active shielding is presented. By nulling one or two external moments as well as a certain series of internal moments of the magnetic field, new designs with improved shielding in combination with or without shorter magnet lengths are obtained. The improved method can be employed to design short and practical superconducting magnets at any given field strength. The resulting designs yield the desired field homogeneity inside the region of interest without using superconducting shim coils. This approach requires only a modest amount of computing power. One of the design steps, a contour plot of the continuous current solutions, can be utilized to study stretch goals for favorable design parameters.

Genetic design of solids possessing a random-particulate microstructure.

There exists a variety of difficulties in the computational design of macroscopic solid material properties formed by doping a homogeneous base matrix material with randomly distributed particles having different properties. Three primary problems are (1) the wide array of free microdesign variables, such as particle topology, property phase contrasts and volume fraction, which render the associated objective functions to be highly non-convex; (2) that the associated objective functions are not differentiable with respect to design variables, primarily due to prescribed constraints, such as prespecified restrictions on the microscale stress-field behaviour; and (3) the effective responses of various finite-sized samples, of equal volume but of different random particle distributions, exhibit mutual fluctuations, leading to amplified noise in optimization strategies where objective function sensitivities or comparisons are needed. The focus of this paper is the development of a statistical genetic algorithm which can handle difficulties due to non-convexity, lack of regularity and size effects. Theoretical properties of the overall approach are investigated. Semi-analytical and large-scale numerical examples, involving finite-element type discretizations, are given to illustrate its practical application.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is publishing an order granting a petition requesting exemption from the premarket notification requirements for data acquisition units for ceramic dental restoration systems. This rule exempts from premarket notification data acquisition units for ceramic dental restoration systems and establishes a guidance document as a special control for this device. FDA is publishing this order in accordance with the Food and Drug Administration Modernization Act of 1997 (FDAMA).
