Recent Irish migration: a note on a neglected data source.

Abstract

"This paper uses unpublished tabulations from the British Labour Force Survey of 1977 to provide an independent estimate of net migration to Ireland over the period 1971-79.... The paper also describes the characteristics of Irish emigrants to Britain in the year preceding the survey. Notwithstanding sustained net immigration since 1971, Ireland still experiences a significant outflow of economically active migrants. The skill level of such migrants would appear to be somewhat higher than that of their predecessors." (SUMMARY IN FRE)

Health state values for the HUI 2 descriptive system: results from a UK survey.

This paper reports the results of a study to estimate a statistical health state valuation model for a revised version of the Health Utilities Index Mark 2, using Standard Gamble health state preference data. A sample of 51 health states were valued by a sample of the 198 members of the UK general population. Models are estimated for predicting health state valuations for all 8000 states defined by the revised HUI2. The recommended model produces logical and significant coefficients for all levels of all dimensions in the HUI2. These coefficients appear to be robust across model specifications. This model performs well in predicting the observed health state values within the valuation sample and for a separate validation sample of health states. However, there are concerns over large prediction errors for two health states in the valuation sample. These problems must be balanced against concerns over the validity of using the VAS based health state valuation data of the original HUI2 valuation model.

Regression analysis of multiple source and multiple informant data from complex survey samples.

In this tutorial, we describe regression-based methods for analysing multiple source data arising from complex sample survey designs. We use the term 'multiple-source' data to encompass all cases where data are simultaneously obtained from multiple informants, or raters (e.g. self-reports, family members, health care providers, administrators) or via different/parallel instruments, indicators or methods (e.g. symptom rating scales, standardized diagnostic interviews, or clinical diagnoses). We review regression models for analysing multiple source risk factors or multiple source outcomes and show that they can be considered special cases of generalized linear models, albeit with correlated outcomes. We show how these methods can be extended to handle the common survey features of stratification, clustering, and sampling weights. We describe how to fit regression models with multiple source reports derived from complex sample surveys using general purpose statistical software. Finally, the methods are illustrated using data from two studies: the Stirling County Study and the Eastern Connecticut Child Survey.
