[Genetic programs in development of three-dimensional organs].
Abstract
Regenerative medicine has become popular especially after establishment of human embryonic stem cells in 1998. Somatic stem cells are also potential candidates for cell therapy. For long-term success, however, an appropriate balance should be needed between clinical application and basic developmental biology. Mimicking what is happening in embryonic development could lead to a breakthrough for generating functional organs in vitro. This review provides an overview on how three-dimensional organs are formed.
