Abstract

The eminent Transylvanian historian of medicine, Prof. Sámuel Izsák calls our attention to the fact that István Weszprémi's biographical work - published in the 18th century -- is still an important source and guide for researchers. Based on three examples - on those of Ascanius, Adám Molnár and Mihail Halici -, he shows that Weszprémi's work even today has proved useful in solving historical problems.

The historiography of Swedish sociology and the bounding of disciplinary identity.

Bounding a scientific discipline is a way of regulating its cognitive direction as well as its relations to neighboring disciplines and extra-academic authorities. In this process of identity making, disciplinary history often is a crucial element. In this article, focusing on the historiography of Swedish sociology and the reception of Gustaf Steffen, Sweden's first professional sociologist, it is argued that Steffen's marginalized role in the traditional accounts should be understood not only with reference to his supposed theoretical shortcomings, but also in the historical context of the early postwar reestablishment of sociology as an academic discipline and its prevalent need for a new disciplinary identity, strategically adjusted to the contemporary institutional and political settings.

[To the adoption of von Hallers medical and medical history work in the 19th and 20th centuries].

A survey of the secondary literature of Albrecht Haller's medical work after his death (1777) reveals that already in the 19th century most of his topics and his methods were discussed and appreciated. Within physiology his doctrine of irritability and sensibility received most attention. The 20th century shows a considerable expansion of the secondary literature. However, there is still a lack of monographs dealing with Haller's medical work in a comprehensive way. Not only was the appreciation of Haller's medical work in the more than 200 years since his death constantly high but, for whatever reasons, it is even characterized by an increasing interest of researchers from many fields.
