[Current psychoanalytic observations on dreams].

Abstract

What is a dream from a psychoanalytical point of view? Freud first contemplates the fulfillment of the wish (1900), then the compulsion to repeat (1920) and finally the benefit of pleasure (1925). Following J. Lacan, a function of coding can be brought out: the dream substitutes the picture translated enjoyment of the sign from traumatic reality. Thus, the dream dreamt is not a message but a means of enjoyment of the unconscious.

Dreams of Freud and Jung: reciprocal relationships between social relations and archetypal/transpersonal imagination.

Phenomenological and quantitative comparisons of the dreams of Freud and Jung become the basis for a more extended understanding of the relation between the psychodynamic and transpersonal/archetypal perspectives. Winnicott's distinction between the dimensions of being and doing/relating offers a developmental model of these perspectives based on a dialectic between two lines of growth-each with its own forms of health/pathology and its own primitive/advanced expressions. These dimensions, in both their positive and negative forms, are shown to be densely intertwined throughout the dreams (and characters) of Freud and Jung, whose theories emerge as reasonable reflections of their complementary ways of being in the world.

The concept of phylogenetic inheritance in Freud and Jung.

At the height of their collaboration in late 1911, Freud had succeeded in persuading Jung of the role of phylogenetic factors in the etiology of neuroses and psychoses. Phylogenetic considerations play an important part in the formulation of Jung's genetic standpoint of psychology with its conception of a desexualized primal libido, which figured prominently in the dispute which ended the relations between Freud and Jung. Freud's unpublished draft of "Overview of the Transference Neuroses" was in part an attempt to counter Jung's revisions of libido theory by using phylogenetic considerations to reaffirm his original conception of a unified sexual libido. Despite the sharp divergence of many aspects of their respective psychologies after the break, a conception of phylogenetic inheritance continued to play an important role in their developing theoretical formulations.
