Effect of new poly 2-acryloyl-N,N'-bis (4-nitrophenyl) propandiamide and poly 2-acryloyl-N,N'-bis (4-methylphenyl) propandiamide and their synergistic action on the stability of nitrocellulose.

The stability of nitrocellulose can be significantly improved by incorporating two novel polymeric compounds as new stabilizers, each has two p-substituted phenyl rings in its repeating unit. The two prepared polymers were used independently and in three different blend ratios in comparison with the conventional propellant stabilizer, diphenylamine. The efficiency of the prepared stabilizers and their synergistic effect were evaluated using thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA), Bergmann-Junk test and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). It was found that both polymers and their 50%:50% blend ratio are more efficient nitrocellulose stabilizers than diphenylamine.

Integration of on-column immobilized enzyme reactor in microchip electrophoresis.

A simple method integrating an immobilized enzyme reactor into a microchip electrophoresis device was developed. The enzyme immobilization into a microchip was performed by spotting and drying a drop of dissolved nitrocellulose (NC) on a glass substrate, and adsorbing enzyme on the reconstituted NC membrane. This enzyme-immobilized glass plate was assembled with a polydimethylsiloxane substrate on which the separation channel was fabricated. The advantage of this method is the ability to easily change the position and size of the reactor within the microchip electrophoresis device. A beta-galactosidase reaction was demonstrated with fluorescein di-beta-D-galactopyranoside using this integrated on-column enzyme reactor. A successful electrophoretic separation of its hydrolysis products, i.e., fluorescein mono-beta-D-galactopyranoside (FMG) and fluorescein, was achieved. Enzyme kinetics and inhibition of the beta-galactosidase using FMG and 2-phenylethyl beta-D-thiogalactoside, respectively, were also studied with microchip electrophoresis.

Utilisation of waste nitrocellulose powders and environmental pollution in their destruction.

The composition of major types of waste powders and pollution during their long-term storage in military storehouses are shown. An analysis of the powder related problems and the types of their recycling and utilisation is proposed. The gaseous products released from incineration of two major types of powder under atmospheric pressure were measured. It is proposed to utilise the powders through processing in polymer mixtures for the production of paint materials. The coatings made thereof have standard characteristics with self-extinguishing and low-flammability-point properties. A diagram of installation for waste powder processing by wasteless technology is shown.
