Rapid self-assembly of submicrospheres at liquid surface by controlling evaporation and its mechanism.

A simple process is demonstrated to transfer the self-assembly of submicrospheres from solid substrate to liquid surface in fabricating synthetic opal. Irradiating light and controlled airflow are used to control the evaporation of solvent. This process induces solid layer with colors. SEM images of the solid layers show that those layers are synthetic opals for well ordered polystyrene spheres in a hexagonal close-packed structure over a large scale. An absorption peak is also observed at 541 nm in normal transmission spectrum of the fabricated sample. Furthermore, investigation of the phase transitions indicates that nuclei of synthetic opals grow up through accumulating at their bottom and extending at their edges during self-assembly.

A Raman spectroscopic study of the uranyl phosphate mineral bergenite.

Raman spectroscopy at 298 and 77 K of bergenite has been used to characterise this uranyl phosphate mineral. Bands at 995, 971 and 961 cm-1 (298 K) and 1006, 996, 971, 960 and 948 cm-1 (77K) are assigned to the nu1(PO4)3- symmetric stretching vibration. Three bands at 1059, 1107 and 1152 cm-1 (298 K) and 1061, 1114 and 1164 cm-1 (77 K) are attributed to the nu3(PO4)3- antisymmetric stretching vibrations. Two bands at 810 and 798 cm-1 (298 K) and 812 and 800 cm-1 (77 K) are attributed to the nu1 symmetric stretching vibration of the (UO2)2+ units. Bands at 860 cm-1 (298 K) and 866 cm-1 (77 K) are assigned to the nu3 antisymmetric stretching vibrations of the (UO2)2+ units. UO bond lengths in uranyls, calculated using the wavenumbers of the nu1 and nu3(UO2)2+ vibrations with empirical relations by Bartlett and Cooney, are in agreement with the X-ray single crystal structure data. Bands at (444, 432, 408 cm-1) (298 K), and (446, 434, 410 and 393 cm-1) (77 K) are assigned to the split doubly degenerate nu2(PO4)3- in-plane bending vibrations. The band at 547 cm-1 (298 K) and 549 cm-1 (77 K) are attributed to the nu4(PO4)3- out-of-plane bending vibrations. Raman bands at 3607, 3459, 3295 and 2944 cm-1 are attributed to water stretching vibrations and enable the calculation of hydrogen bond distances of >3.2, 2.847, 2.740 and 2.637 A. These bands prove the presence of structurally nonequivalent hydrogen bonded water molecules in the structure of bergenite.

Phosphorus removal by electric arc furnace steel slag and serpentinite.

Electric arc furnace (EAF) steel slag and serpentinite were tested in columns either alone or mixed with limestone to determine their capacity to remove phosphorus (P) from a solution containing initially 20mg P/L (for 114 days) than 400mg P/L (for 21 days). EAF steel slag was nearly 100% efficient due to specific P adsorption onto metal hydroxides and precipitation of hydroxyapatite. Serpentinite also showed a good performance that decreased with time, adsorption appearing to be the dominant mechanism for P removal. Mixing limestone with these two materials did not improve their performance and in the case of serpentinite, it actually even decreased it. In 114 days of experimentation, serpentinite alone and the mixture of serpentinite and limestone removed 1.0mg P/g while in 180 days of experimentation, EAF steel slag and the mixture of slag and limestone removed an average of 2.2mg P/g, without attaining their maximum P removal potential. The void hydraulic retention time (HRTv) was a key factor for growing hydroxyapatite crystals and had a significant effect on P removal efficiency by EAF steel slag. A temporary increase in HRTv caused by clogging resulted in an increase in EAF steel slag efficiency (from 80% to almost 100%) towards the end of investigation. Results from this study indicate that the use of EAF steel slag in constructed wetlands or filter beds is a promising solution for P removal via adsorption and precipitation mechanisms.
