Real-time data acquisition and control system for the measurement of motor and neural data.

This paper outlines a powerful, yet flexible real-time data acquisition and control system for use in the triggering and measurement of both analog and digital events. Built using the LabVIEW development architecture (version 7.1) and freely available, this system provides precisely timed auditory and visual stimuli to a subject while recording analog data and timestamps of neural activity retrieved from a window discriminator. The system utilizes the most recent real-time (RT) technology in order to provide not only a guaranteed data acquisition rate of 1 kHz, but a much more difficult to achieve guaranteed system response time of 1 ms. The system interface is windows-based and easy to use, providing a host of configurable options for end-user customization.

The future of real-time cardiac magnetic resonance imaging.

Dynamic changes in cardiac structure and function are usually examined by real-time imaging techniques such as angiography or echocardiography. MRI has many advantages compared with these established cardiac imaging modalities. However, system hardware and software limitations have limited cardiac MRI to gated acquisitions that are lengthy and often result in failed acquisitions and examinations. Recently, MRI has evolved into a technique capable of imaging dynamic processes in real time. Improvements in hardware, pulse sequences, and image reconstruction algorithms have enabled real-time cardiac MRI with high spatial resolution, high temporal resolution, and various types of image contrast without requiring cardiac gating or breath-holding. This article provides an overview of current capability and highlights key technical and clinical advances. The future prospects of real-time cardiac MRI will depend on 1) the development of techniques that further improve signal to noise ratio, contrast, spatial resolution, and temporal resolution, without introducing artifacts; 2) the development of software infrastructure that facilitates rapid interactive examination; and 3) the development and validation of several new clinical assessments.

PropeR revisited.

INTRODUCTION: The PropeR EHR system (PropeRWeb) is a multidisciplinary electronic health record (EHR) system for multidisciplinary use in extramural patient care for stroke patients. DESIGN: The system is built using existing open source components and is based on open standards. It is implemented as a web application using servlets and Java Server Pages (JSP's) with a CORBA connection to the database servers, which are based on the OMG HDTF specifications. PropeRWeb is a generic system which can be readily customized for use in a variety of clinical domains. EVALUATION: The system proved to be stable and flexible, although some aspects (a.o. user friendliness) could be improved. These improvements are currently under development in a second version.
