What do we do with the SARS reports?

Abstract

The magnitude of the SARS disaster led to the establishment of several commissions and inquiries, whose reports are now available. While the reports were triggered by SARS, and focus on many issues arising from SARS, they all clearly acknowledge that concerns regarding public health in this country are long-standing. Virtually every report on the future of our health system has identified the need for investment in public health, disease prevention and health promotion as a key to sustaining our healthcare system. Yet, these earlier recommendations have been largely ignored. We can only hope that with the magnitude of the SARS disaster still relatively fresh in our minds, we will not ignore these new reports.

A counter-clockwise northern route of the Y-chromosome haplogroup N from Southeast Asia towards Europe.

A large part of Y chromosome lineages in East European and East Asian human populations belong to haplogroup (hg) NO, which is composed of two sister clades N-M231 and O-M175. The O-clade is relatively old (around 30 thousand years (ky)) and encompasses the vast majority of east and Southeast Asian male lineages, as well as significant proportion of those in Oceanian males. On the other hand, our detailed analysis of hg N suggests that its high frequency in east Europe is due to its more recent expansion westward on a counter-clock northern route from inner Asia/southern Siberia, approximately 12-14 ky ago. The widespread presence of hg N in Siberia, together with its absence in Native Americans, implies its spread happened after the founder event for the Americas. The most frequent subclade N3, arose probably in the region of present day China, and subsequently experienced serial bottlenecks in Siberia and secondary expansions in eastern Europe. Another branch, N2, forms two distinctive subclusters of STR haplotypes, Asian (N2-A) and European (N2-E), the latter now mostly distributed in Finno-Ugric and related populations. These phylogeographic patterns provide evidence consistent with male-mediated counter-clockwise late Pleistocene-Holocene migratory trajectories toward Northwestern Europe from an ancestral East Asian source of Paleolithic heritage.

History of Tropical Medicine William Ernest Cooke, FRCSI (1879-1967) and his Asian tour of 1929-1930.

Dr. W.E. Cooke was not one of the most distinguished of tropical physicians, but the specialty was heavily dependent on his likes. After several junior appointments, he was Superintendent of the Hospital for Tropical Diseases in London. He carried out an extensive tour of Asia in 1929-1930 and kept careful daily notes throughout this period, giving a valuable insight into the challenges faced by the pioneering tropical physicians and surgeons from European countries.

A mitochondrial stratigraphy for island southeast Asia.

Island Southeast Asia (ISEA) was first colonized by modern humans at least 45,000 years ago, but the extent to which the modern inhabitants trace their ancestry to the first settlers is a matter of debate. It is widely held, in both archaeology and linguistics, that they are largely descended from a second wave of dispersal, proto-Austronesian-speaking agriculturalists who originated in China and spread to Taiwan approximately 5,500 years ago. From there, they are thought to have dispersed into ISEA approximately 4,000 years ago, assimilating the indigenous populations. Here, we demonstrate that mitochondrial DNA diversity in the region is extremely high and includes a large number of indigenous clades. Only a fraction of these date back to the time of first settlement, and the majority appear to mark dispersals in the late-Pleistocene or early-Holocene epoch most likely triggered by postglacial flooding. There are much closer genetic links to Taiwan than to the mainland, but most of these probably predated the mid-Holocene "Out of Taiwan" event as traditionally envisioned. Only approximately 20% at most of modern mitochondrial DNAs in ISEA could be linked to such an event, suggesting that, if an agriculturalist migration did take place, it was demographically minor, at least with regard to the involvement of women.
