Is the allylpalladium structure altered between solid and solutions?

Abstract

Recent EXAFS measurements on [(Ph(2)PCH(2)CH(2)PPh(2))Pd(H(2)CCHCMe(2))]O(3)SCF(3) (Tromp et al. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2002, 124, 14814) were interpreted as evidence that, when the complex is dissolved in THF, the allyl ligand adopts an eta(2) structure with a dangling allyl CH(2) substituent. DFT calculations of the Pd complex using H(2)P-CH(2)CH(2)-PH(2) as a model for Ph(2)P-CH(2)CH(2)-PPh(2) (dppe), in the absence or the presence of the triflate counteranion, and modeling the THF solvent by explicit Me(2)O molecules or by a continuum model give always a conventional eta(3)-H(2)CCHCMe(2) structure with equal Pd-C bonds to the terminal carbon centers of the allyl. QM/MM calculations using the dppe ligand also fail to support an eta(2)-allyl structure as a global minimum. The EXAFS parameter space is shown to have multiple minima. These have very similar overall EXAFS, but have very different structural parameters. The minimum that was the basis for the previous structural conclusion gives a slightly better fit but has unrealistic Debye-Waller factors and threshold energies.

Synthesis of 7-deoxypancratistatin from carbohydrates by the use of olefin metathesis.

The stereocontrolled synthesis of (+)-7-deoxypancratistatin is described. The convergent synthesis has been achieved by two different strategies, both of which commence from a pentose and piperonal. The latter is converted into allylic bromide 7, which is then coupled with a protected methyl 5-deoxy-5-iodo-D-ribofuranoside in the presence of zinc metal. The first strategy involves a total of only 13 steps from D-ribose and piperonal, but suffers from a low yield in the zinc-mediated reaction between ribofuranoside 9, benzylamine, and bromide 7. The second strategy involves a total of 18 steps from D-xylose and piperonal. The former is converted into ribofuranoside 28, which is coupled with bromide 7 in the presence of zinc, and this is followed by ring-closing olefin metathesis. Subsequent Overman rearrangement, dihydroxylation, and deprotection then affords the natural product.

Water exclusion at the nanometer scale provides long-term passivation of silicon (111) grafted with alkyl monolayers.

This work is a quantitative study of the conditions required for a long-term passivation of the interface silicon-alkyl monolayers prepared by thermal hydrosilyation of neat 1-alkenes on well-defined H-Si(111) surfaces. We present electrochemical capacitance measurements (C-U) in combination with ex situ atomic force microscopy (AFM) observations and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements. Capacitance measurements as a function of the reaction time and XPS data reveal close correlations between the chemical composition at the interface and its electronic properties. A very low density of states is found if suboxide formation is carefully prevented. The monitoring of C-U plots and AFM imaging upon exposure of the sample in diverse conditions indicate that the initial electronic properties and structure of the interface are long-lasting only when the monolayer surface coverage is theta > 0.42. A model demonstrates that this threshold value corresponds to a monolayer with intermolecular channels narrower than approximately 2.82 A, which is equal to the diameter of a water molecule. Water exclusion from the monolayer promotes long-term passivation of the silicon surface against oxidation in air and water as well as perfect corrosion inhibition in 20% NH(4)F. We provide two criteria to assess when a sample is optimized: The first one is an effective dielectric constant <2.5, and the second one is a very characteristic energy diagram at open circuit potential.
