BNCT dose calculation in irregular fields using the sector integration method.

Abstract

Irregular fields for boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) have been already proposed to spare normal tissue in the treatment of superficial tumors. This added dependence would require custom measurements and/or to have a secondary calculation system. As a first step, we implemented the sector-integration method for irregular field calculation in a homogeneous medium and on the central beam axis. The dosimetric responses (fast neutron and photon dose and thermal neutron flux), are calculated by sector integrating the measured responses of circular fields over the field boundary. The measurements were carried out at our BNCT facility, the RA-6 reactor (Argentina). The input data were dosimetric responses for circular fields measured at different depths in a water phantom using ionisation and activation techniques. Circular fields were formed by shielding the beam with two plates: borated polyethilene plus lead. As a test, the dosimetric responses of a 7x4 cm(2) rectangular field, were measured and compared to calculations, yielding differences less than 3% in equivalent dose at any depth indicating that the tool is suitable for redundant calculations.

Molecular diagnosis of spinal muscular atrophy: Experience in a pediatric hospital in Argentina.

Introduction. Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is an autosomal recessive neuromuscular disease caused by the loss of the SMN1 gene, with a variable clinical spectrum determined primarily by the number of copies of the SMN2 gene. The development of new therapies underscores the importance of early molecular diagnosis and genotype-phenotype characterization. Objective. To describe 27 years of experience in the molecular diagnosis of SMA at a pediatric referral hospital in Argentina and to evaluate the correlation between SMN2 copy number and the SMA types.Population and methods. A retrospective descriptive study was conducted on 1060 pediatric patients with clinically suspected SMA who were evaluated between 1997 and 2024. Molecular diagnosis was performed using PCR-RFLP and, since 2012, MLPA to determine SMN1 and SMN2 copy number. Genotype-phenotype correlation was evaluated in 260 patients with complete clinical characterization. Results. The diagnosis was confirmed in 513 patients. A homozygous deletion of the SMN1 gene was detected in 99.6% of unrelated cases. The positivity rate increased over time. A significant correlation was observed between the number of SMN2 copies and the type of SMA, with milder phenotypes associated with a higher number of copies. Conclusion. Molecular diagnosis of SMA enabled accurate and timely characterization of patients, avoiding invasive procedures and optimizing therapeutic decision-making. Genotype-phenotype correlation is a fundamental tool for prognosis and clinical management, highlighting the importance of an interdisciplinary approach.

Leaf strategies and soil N across a regional humidity gradient in Patagonia.

We analyzed leaf traits related to carbon-fixation, nutrient conservation strategies, and decomposability and their relationships with potential N-mineralization and microbial N in soil in 19 species of 5 dominant life forms growing in 40 sites across a regional humidity gradient in northern Patagonia. We hypothesized that (1) the shifting of species and life forms across the humidity gradient is related to a shifting in traits of green and senesced leaves with some overlapping among life forms, and (2) leaf traits associated with litter decomposition are related to the potential dynamics of soil-N across the humidity gradient. LMA in green leaves and P-resorption efficiency decreased with humidity while concentrations of lignin and total phenolics in green and senesced leaves and P concentration in senesced leaves increased with humidity. Soil C and N concentrations were positively correlated to humidity. Increasing soil N concentration was related to increasing rates of absolute (per unit soil mass) potential net N-mineralization and microbial-N flush. Relative (per unit N mass) potential net N-mineralization and microbial-N flush decreased with soil N and were inversely correlated to lignin concentration and C/N ratio in senesced leaves. We found overlapping in N concentration and C/N ratio in green and senesced leaves, P concentration in green leaves, and N resorption among species and life forms across the humidity gradient. We concluded that (1) leaf traits related to carbon fixation and the decomposition pathway significantly varied with humidity and were not overlapped between plant life forms from dry and humid habitats, (2) the largest overlapping among species and plant life forms across the gradient occurred in those leaf traits related to N conservation in the plant, and (3) life forms from humid habitats produce more recalcitrant litter that induce lower rates of relative potential net N mineralization (per unit N) than those of dry habitats.

Trajectories associated to regional and extra-regional pollen transport in the southeast of Buenos Aires province, Mar del Plata (Argentina).

Long range transport of airborne pollen has been seldom studied in South America. Backward trajectories of Celtis and Nothofagus pollen grains trapped over a meteorological station outside Mar del Plata City were calculated in one-hour steps using the regional hybrid model developed by the NOAA (HYSPLIT 4.5) and the data of the NCEP filed in the NOAA server. Results showed that the observed trajectories agree with the location of vegetation sources of the collected tree species. In the case of Celtis, the transport was associated to anticyclones located east of the city, generating winds with a N-NE component, which produce pollen cloud advection from the Celtis forests located some tens of kilometers to the N and NE of the city. The sources of Nothofagus pollen correspond to a narrow strip on the Andes slopes between 39 degrees and 55 degrees S, at least 1100 km to the SW of Mar del Plata. The transport was associated to eastward displacement of the troughs corresponding to the Westerlies circulation and the presence of an anticyclone system that brings back Nothofagus pollen towards Mar del Plata area.
