Multiple sclerosis in Chile.

Abstract

So far as we know this series of 68 cases is one of the first clinical accounts of multiple sclerosis in South America. Average age of onset was 30.7 years and female:male ratio was 2:1. The most frequent initial symptom was motor impairment and less frequent was visual loss. Most affected site of involvement in established cases was the optic nerve. There were no familial cases. The severity of the disease in Chile proved to be the same as elsewhere. No characteristic clinical pattern peculiar to the region emerged.

Toxic trace elements in Chilean seafoods: development of analytical quality control procedures.

Chile is a well known producer and exporter of shell fish. These seafoods, like other specimens of marine origin, are susceptible to environmental and other contamination by trace elements, including toxicants. Therefore, adequate analytical quality assurance is mandatory before accepting analytical results. In this context, the use of at least two independent methods of determination and validation with certified reference materials (CRM) provides acceptable criteria for judging the reliability of the data. This paper describes sample treatments and analytical procedures for Cd, Cu and Hg determinations in mollusc samples. Three independent analytical techniques, namely differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry, neutron activation analysis and atomic absorption spectrometry, were used. CRM standards of the IAEA, NIST and BCR were analyzed to evaluate quality assurance. Following the quality control phase, the concentrations of cadmium, copper and mercury in fresh and canned mollusc samples Tagelus dombeii and Semelle solida (Navajuelas and Almejas chilenas respectively) from different locations were determined.

Nosocomial transmission of rotavirus from patients admitted with diarrhea.

We studied the transmission of rotavirus (RV) in 950 patients under 2 years of age hospitalized for diarrhea in Santiago, Chile. Stool samples were collected every other day from all patients during their entire hospital stay. To trace nosocomial transmission, we mapped the ward at the time of detection of RV. Comparative study by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of 315 RV isolates (180 detected upon admission of patients and 135 attributed to nosocomial transmission) allowed the identification of 18 different electropherotypes. An electropherotype similar to that of a community-acquired case was found in the same room in 81% of nosocomial cases and in the ward in 92% of nosocomial cases. It was concluded that the infants admitted shedding RV are the major source of nosocomial transmission and there was not a RV strain that was particularly transmissible.
