Stiffness and texture perception for teledermatology.

Abstract

The goal of the teledermatology project currently being carried out at Stanford University is to deliver tactile images of the human skin to a dermatologist at a remote location, in real time. In order to make a diagnosis, dermatologists typically need to obtain data regarding the skin texture and the mechanical properties of any lesions on a patient's skin. For example, pre-cancerous or weather-damaged skin typically feels rougher than normal skin and the profile and stiffness of the underlying tissue may shed light on the nature of a skin disease.

[In memory of our Jewish colleagues who were murdered or committed suicide during the National Socialist Era].

With this article, we commemorate our Jewish colleagues who were murdered or committed suicide during the National Socialist Era in 1933-1945. Additionally, this article should provide an impulse to create a worthy memorial place. We thereby propose to put up commemorative plaques, e.g. in front of the administrative office of the German Dermatologic Society. Fifty-six Jewish dermatologists were killed in concentration camps in the National Socialist Era; 23 died in Theresienstadt, 19 in Auschwitz, and 14 in other concentration or extermination camps. Thirteen Jewish dermatologists committed suicide.
