On the relation between initial value and slope.

Abstract

Suppose measurements of a particular feature are collected at baseline and at a number of subsequent time points and that for each individual there is a roughly linear trend in time. This paper takes three approaches to testing whether there is a relation between the initial value and the slope. It also considers whether the initial value for an individual is a useful predictor of the slope for that individual. The problems are formulated in terms of regression models with random coefficients. The solutions are illustrated using data from an observational study of clinical correlates of disability and progression in Huntington's disease.

Improving the quality of patient care using reliability measures: a classification tree approach.

This paper considers the application and interpretation of new reliability measures for a classification tree-based medical risk assessment tool. Following the construction of a classification tree reliability measures may then be used to provide an estimate of the precision of the classification and the probability in each terminal node of the classification tree. Identification of unreliable nodes (those that have low precision) in this application may indicate patient groups requiring closer monitoring or scenarios in which further information about the patient is required, thereby providing medical practitioners with an avenue for more informed decision making.

Confidence intervals for the amount of heterogeneity in meta-analysis.

Effect size estimates to be combined in a systematic review are often found to be more variable than one would expect based on sampling differences alone. This is usually interpreted as evidence that the effect sizes are heterogeneous. A random-effects model is then often used to account for the heterogeneity in the effect sizes. A novel method for constructing confidence intervals for the amount of heterogeneity in the effect sizes is proposed that guarantees nominal coverage probabilities even in small samples when model assumptions are satisfied. A variety of existing approaches for constructing such confidence intervals are summarized and the various methods are applied to an example to illustrate their use. A simulation study reveals that the newly proposed method yields the most accurate coverage probabilities under conditions more analogous to practice, where assumptions about normally distributed effect size estimates and known sampling variances only hold asymptotically.

Constructing binomial confidence intervals with near nominal coverage by adding a single imaginary failure or success.

In this paper we present a simple method for constructing (1- alpha)100 per cent confidence intervals for binomial proportions with near nominal coverage for all underlying proportion parameters on the unit interval. This new method uses, with a slight modification, the standard normal approximation technique taught in introductory statistics classes. Specifically, we first augment the observed binomial data with an imaginary failure to compute the lower bound and an imaginary success to compute the upper bound. By contrast, the Agresti-Coull method adds the same number of imaginary successes and failures to the observed data, yet it can still give somewhat subnominal coverage. As motivation, we discuss the relationship between this new method and the Clopper-Pearson exact method. We also present numerical calculations to illustrate the satisfactory performance of this new method compared with several common alternatives. Finally, we argue that for certain statistical applications, such as the design and analysis of clinical trials with adverse events, this new method represents a valuable complementary approach.
