The phase-modulated logistic map.

Abstract

We study the logistic mapping with the nonlinearity parameter varied through a delayed feedback mechanism. This history dependent modulation through a phaselike variable offers an enhanced possibility for stabilization of periodic dynamics. Study of the system as a function of nonlinearity and modulation parameters reveals new phenomena: In addition to period-doubling and tangent bifurcations, there can be bifurcations where the period increases by unity. These are extensions of crises that arise in nonlinear dynamical systems. Periodic orbits in this system can be systematized via the kneading theory, which in the present case extends the analysis of Metropolis, Stein, and Stein for unimodal maps.

Relative extents of preformation and neoformation in tree shoots: Analysis by a deconvolution method.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Neoformation is the process by which organs not preformed in a bud are developed on a growing shoot, generally after preformation extension. The study of neoformation in trees has been hindered due to methodological reasons. The present report is aimed at assessing the relative importance of preformation and neoformation in the development of shoots of woody species. METHODS: A deconvolution method was applied to estimate the distribution of the number of neoformed organs for eight data sets corresponding to four Nothofagus species and a Juglans hybrid. KEY RESULTS: The number of preformed organs was higher and less variable than the number of neoformed organs. Neoformation contributed more than preformation to explain full-size differences between shoots developed in different positions within the architecture of each tree species. CONCLUSIONS: Differences between the distributions of the numbers of preformed and neoformed organs may be explained by alluding to the duration of differentiation and extension for each of these groups of organs. The deconvolution of distributions is a useful tool for the analysis of neoformation and shoot structure in trees.

Dynamics of asynchronous random Boolean networks with asynchrony generated by stochastic processes.

An asynchronous Boolean network with N nodes whose states at each time point are determined by certain parent nodes is considered. We make use of the models developed by Matache and Heidel [Matache, M.T., Heidel, J., 2005. Asynchronous random Boolean network model based on elementary cellular automata rule 126. Phys. Rev. E 71, 026232] for a constant number of parents, and Matache [Matache, M.T., 2006. Asynchronous random Boolean network model with variable number of parents based on elementary cellular automata rule 126. IJMPB 20 (8), 897-923] for a varying number of parents. In both these papers the authors consider an asynchronous updating of all nodes, with asynchrony generated by various random distributions. We supplement those results by using various stochastic processes as generators for the number of nodes to be updated at each time point. In this paper we use the following stochastic processes: Poisson process, random walk, birth and death process, Brownian motion, and fractional Brownian motion. We study the dynamics of the model through sensitivity of the orbits to initial values, bifurcation diagrams, and fixed-point analysis. The dynamics of the system show that the number of nodes to be updated at each time point is of great importance, especially for the random walk, the birth and death, and the Brownian motion processes. Small or moderate values for the number of updated nodes generate order, while large values may generate chaos depending on the underlying parameters. The Poisson process generates order. With fractional Brownian motion, as the values of the Hurst parameter increase, the system exhibits order for a wider range of combinations of the underlying parameters.

Random delays and the synchronization of chaotic maps.

We investigate the dynamics of an array of chaotic logistic maps coupled with random delay times. We report that for adequate coupling strength the array is able to synchronize, in spite of the random delays. Specifically, we find that the synchronized state is a homogeneous steady state, where the chaotic dynamics of the individual maps is suppressed. This synchronization behavior is largely independent of the connection topology and depends mainly on the average number of links per node. We carry out a statistical linear stability analysis that confirms the numerical results and provides a better understanding of the nontrivial roles of random delayed interactions.
