[CS by request--a reasonable alternative?].

Abstract

The doctor-patient relation has been changing as a whole together with the evolution of society. The right of choice should play a main role in female public health as it represents a fundamental social and constitutional law. The growing rate of caesarean sections in Stara Zagora, Bulgaria and in the world are analyzed and the organizational factors having an impact on it are shown. On-line polls among doctors and patients were used. A conclusion was drawn that it is better to have the indication "caesarean section by patient's request" rather than performing abdominal deliveries under fabricated indications.

IGF1, growth pathway polymorphisms and schizophrenia: a pooling study.

It has been hypothesized that insulin-like growth factors (IGFs) and components of the growth-hormone (GH)-IGF axis may underlie reported associations of poor fetal and childhood growth with schizophrenia. We have investigated the association of schizophrenia with 16 SNPs spanning the IGF1 gene with an inter-marker distance of approximately 2-3 kb. We also examined associations with four common functional polymorphisms of genes involved in aspects of the GH-IGF system--the IGF1 receptor (IGF1R), insulin receptor substrate (IRS1), growth hormone (GH1), and IGF binding protein-3 (IGFBP3). The study was based on an analysis of pooled DNA samples from 648 UK and Irish cases of schizophrenia and 712 blood donor controls and of 297 Bulgarian parent offspring trios. In replicated pool analyses, none of the 16 SNPs in IGF1 nor the 4 key SNPs in the other growth pathway genes were associated with schizophrenia. SNP coverage of IGF1 was extensive, so our findings do not support a major role for IGF-I in the aetiology of schizophrenia.

Integral assessment of climate impact on the transboundary Mesta River flow formation in Bulgaria.

The present work considers the section of the Mesta River on Bulgarian territory using the integral method for evaluation of climate and anthropogenic impact on the river flow. The level of this impact is determined by the index K(i) (flow module), the coefficient C(i) for the deviation of the average annual water volume Q(i) from the flow norm Q(o) and the index h(i) for the deviation of the average annual rainfall volume H(i) from the average multi-annual rainfall volume H(o). The dynamics of the average annual flow Q(i) at two typical hydrometric stations - Yakoruda and Khadzhidimovo, as well as the dynamics of the average annual rainfall for the Yakoruda station was examined for the period 1955-2003. The data for the considered period 1955-2003 exhibit a decreasing trend of the average annual water volumes dynamics for both stations due to the impact of climate changes in the Mesta River catchment.
