Comparison of in vitro antioxidant and antiradical activities of L-tyrosine and L-Dopa.

Phenolic compounds are interesting because of their antioxidant properties. In the present study, the antioxidant properties of L-tyrosine as a monophenolic and L-Dopa as a diphenolic amino acid were investigated by using different antioxidant assays: (i) 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl free radical (DPPH*) scavenging; (ii) 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) radical cation decolorization assay; (iii) total antioxidant activity by ferric thiocyanate method; (iv) ferric ions (Fe3+) reducing power; (v) superoxide anion radical (O2*-) scavenging; (vi) hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) scavenging, and (vii) ferrous ions (Fe2+) chelating activities. Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA), butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), alpha-tocopherol and trolox, a water-soluble analogue of tocopherol, were used as the reference antioxidant compounds. At the same concentration (20 microg/mL), L-tyrosine and L-Dopa showed 30.6 and 67.9% inhibition of lipid peroxidation of linoleic acid emulsion, respectively. On the other hand, BHA, BHT, alpha-tocopherol and trolox indicated inhibitions of 74.4, 71.2, 54.7 and 20.1% on the peroxidation of linoleic acid emulsion, respectively, at the above-mentioned concentration. In addition, L-tyrosine and L-Dopa had an effect on DPPH radical scavenging, ABTS radical scavenging, superoxide anion radical scavenging, H2O2 scavenging, total ferric ions reducing power and metal chelating on ferrous ions activities.

Stereospecificity in hydroxyl radical scavenging activities of four ginsenosides produced by heat processing.

The activity-guided fractionation of sun ginseng (SG, heat processed Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer at 120 degrees C) was carried out to identify its main active hydroxyl radical (*OH) scavenging components. As a result, the n-BuOH fraction mainly consisting of ginsenosides showed the strongest activity. Of several ginsenosides of SG, the *OH scavenging activities of relatively high contents of 20(S)-Rg(3), 20(R)-Rg(3), Rk(1), and Rg(5) were compared. Rg(5) and 20(S)-Rg(3) showed strong *OH scavenging IC(50) values of 0.15 and 0.44 mM, respectively, and these activities were prominently higher than each of their respective isomers. Therefore, stereospecificity exists in the *OH scavenging activities of ginsenosides produced by heat processing. Especially, the double bond at carbon-20(22) or the OH group at carbon-20 geometrically close to OH at carbon-12 is thought to increase the *OH scavenging activity of ginsenosides.

Free radical scavenging activity of different extracts and some constituents from the leaves of Ligustrum vulgare and L. delavayanum.

The free radical scavenging activity of the water infusions, different organic solvent extracts and some constituents from Ligustrum vulgare and Ligustrum delavayanum leaves was assessed with the aid of DPPH radical. Among the samples screened, water infusions had the strongest free radical scavenging capacity. From the tested compounds scavenging active flavonoid aglycones are present in the most active chloroform fractions from both leaves samples.
