Materials and methods for cleaning dentures.

Abstract

Proper hygienic care of removable dentures is an important means of maintaining a healthy oral mucosa in denture wearers. Denture cleanliness is often poor due to improper mechanical cleansing and the relative inefficiency of most commercial products for chemical cleansing of dentures. Dentists and patients should realize that microbial plaque on dentures may be harmful to both the oral mucosa and the patient's general health. It is the responsibility of the patient to maintain oral hygiene through a daily home care routine. It is the obligation of the dentist to motivate and instruct the patient and provide the means and methods for plaque control. Future research should be directed to developing solution cleansers which can maintain plaque-free dentures with a daily soaking period of 15 to 30 minutes and not affect the color and surface luster of the denture acrylic resin.

Characterization and stability of hydroxyapatite coatings prepared by an electrodeposition and alkaline-treatment process.

Hydroxyapatite (HA) coatings on titanium alloy substrates were prepared by an alkaline treatment of electrodeposited precursors. The structure, residual stress, and bond strength of the coatings were investigated. Test results showed that the coatings processed in this study exhibited fairly low tensile residual stress, high crystallinity, and were free of an amorphous phase. The bond strength of the coatings increased with the decrease of current density in the range of 0.2-15 mA/cm(2), and reached 14 MPa at 0.2 mA/cm(2). Evaluation of the coatings was performed together with the evaluation of the plasma-sprayed HA coatings immersed in distilled water. It was revealed that the dissolution and bond strength degradation of the coatings were much lower than those of the plasma-sprayed HA coatings.

MSW fly ash stabilized with coal ash for geotechnical application.

The solidification and stabilization of municipal solid waste (MSW) fly ash for the purpose of minimizing the geo-environmental impact caused by toxic heavy metals as well as ensuring engineering safety (strength and soaking durability) are experimentally evaluated. The mixtures of MSW fly ash stabilized with cement and fluidized bed combustion coal fly ash (FCA) were used for unconfined compressive strength tests, leachate tests, and soaking tests. The behavior of soluble salts contained in the MSW fly ash significantly affects strength development, soaking durability, and the hardening reaction of the stabilized MSW fly ash mixtures. The cement stabilization of the MSW fly ash does not have enough effect on strength development and soaking durability. The addition of cement only contributes to the containment of heavy metals due to the high level of alkalinity. When using FCA as a stabilizing agent for MSW fly ash, the mixture exhibits high strength and durability. However, the Cd leachate cannot be prevented in the early stages of curing. Using a combination of cement and FCA as a MSW fly ash stabilizer can attain high strength, high soaking durability, and the containment of heavy metals. The stabilized MSW fly ash with cement and FCA can be practically applied to embankments.

New preconditioning strategy for the determination of inorganic anions with capillary zone electrophoresis using indirect UV detection.

It is widely accepted that preconditioning procedures are indispensable in capillary electrophoresis in order to achieve reproducibility of migration times and peak areas. Several preconditioning strategies have been employed for electrophoretic determinations of inorganic anions using indirect UV detection including simple flushing with buffer or alkaline or acid pre-rinsing followed by flushing with electrolyte. We investigated the influence of various preconditioning strategies on the reproducibility of migration times and peak areas of inorganic anions. The electrolyte systems for indirect UV detection were based on pyromellitic acid and chromic acid respectively as UV absorbing probes and hexamethonium hydroxide as electroosmatic flow modifier. Preconditioning agents under investigation were electrolyte buffer, NaOH, HCl and the free acids of the UV absorbing probes. Investigations showed that reproducibility of migration times and peak areas can be significantly improved by acid pre-rinsing using the corresponding acid of the UV absorbing probes compared to preconditioning by flushing the capillary with buffer. In contrast to acid pre-rinsing using hydrochloric acid no interfering signals within the migration time window of inorganic anions under investigation can be observed. The optimized preconditioning procedure yields relative standard deviations of migration times less than 0.25% (n = 10). Relative standard deviations of corrected peak areas were below 5% applying acid preconditioning using pyromellitic acid.
