Does social work education make a difference?

Abstract

To test the hypothesis that state employees with social work education are better prepared for social work positions than are their colleagues without such education, data were collected in five areas, using different instruments and approaches. The data sets were scores on state merit tests for family service workers, employees' quality assurance scores, ratings of employees from supervisors, measures of employees' commitment to social work values, and measures of employees' confidence in their educational preparedness. Overall, employees with social work degrees, either bachelor's or master's, were better prepared than were those without social work degrees.

Sleeping positions of infants in the Cape Peninsula.

The prone position is thought to be an important factor in the sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). The sleep positions of unselected infants aged 6 months and younger attending clinics in the Cape Peninsula were studied; 62.4% slept prone with the face to the side. This position differs between the ethnic groups (whites 50.0%; blacks 58.7%; coloureds 69.8%) and the respondents' social class (higher classes 54.1%; lower classes 69.2%). The sex of the baby, the sleeping place and the educational level of the mother did not influence the position used. Ninety-four per cent of black infants slept with their mothers compared with 71% of coloured and 4% of white babies. The study confirmed that there are cultural differences in sleeping positions adopted by infants. The role this plays in SIDS among different ethnic groupings still needs to be clarified.

Faculty/student perception of organizational climates in the schools of nursing, Oyo State, Nigeria.

This study examined the influence of educational status and gender on the faculty and students' perceptions of their school climates. A self-designed questionnaire was used to elicit information from the 385 subjects (320 students and 65 tutors). Analysis using the t-test technique revealed that there were no significant differences at the 0.05 level of probability in the perceptions of: (a) faculty and students on climate variables "thrust" (t = 0.31) and "control" (t = 1.19); and (b) both sexes on climate variables "thrust" (t = 1.69), "control" (t = 1.13) and "disengagement" (t = -0.53). The conclusion therefore, is that educational status and gender have little or no influence on the peoples' perception of their school climates.

Level of education and the risk of malignant melanoma.

BACKGROUND: The risk for the development of malignant melanoma has been reported to be higher in persons with more formal education than in individuals with less. OBJECTIVE: To study whether those with more formal education are indeed at more risk for malignant melanoma than those with less formal education. METHODS: This case-control study explores the relation between education and melanoma risk by analyzing data collected by the American Cancer Society. A total of 1.2 million people were surveyed for a history of cancer and followed up for 6 years for the development of any cancer. In total, 2780 white persons had a history of malignant melanoma or developed malignant melanoma during the study period. The controls were age-, sex-, and geographically matched white persons selected from the remaining people enrolled. RESULTS: Both men and women were shown to have a statistically significant increase in the relative risk for malignant melanoma with increasing education level (p less than 0.001 and p = 0.001, respectively). This relation was more striking in men when the relative risk with 95% confidence interval was calculated by sex for each education level. CONCLUSION: Americans with more formal education are at greater risk for malignant melanoma than those with less education.
