Histologic study of use of microfibrillar collagen hemostat in rat dental sockets.

The aim of this paper was to evaluate if the placement of microfibrillar collagen hemostat (MCH) into a dental socket interfered with healing. General anesthesia was administered to 30 adult male Albinus Wistar rats and the maxillary right central incisor was extracted. In the control group after each tooth was extracted, the socket was sutured. In the MCH group after each tooth was extracted, MCH was placed into the socket before suturing. Postoperatively, 5 animals were sacrificed from each group at 7, 21 and 28 days. The right maxilla was removed from each animal and histologic slides were stained with Masson's trichromic and hematoxylin and eosin. Quantitative and qualitative analyses were done. The percentage of bone area in the dental socket was quantified using the Image Lab 98 image analysis system. The bone area formation for the control and MCH groups was: 8.1% and 3.3% at 7 days, 34.4% and 33% at 21 days and 41% and 41.3% at 28 days, respectively. We concluded that MCH interferes with the beginning of dental socket healing but does not interfere with the final healing of the dental socket.

[Effect of unilateral mastication on the remodeling of the glenoid fossae in Wistar rats].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of unilateral mastication on glenoid fossae by means of animal experiment. METHODS: An animal model of unilateral mastication was established by extracting right mandibular molars of Wistar rats. The rats were sacrificed in different period to examine the location changes of glenoid fossae through sagittal and horizontal plane. RESULTS: The anterior points of glenoid fossae in non-masticatory side of experimental groups were more anterior than those in masticatory sides. The anterior points of the glenoid fossae of non-masticatory sides in experimental groups were more anterior than those of the same sides in the control groups after inducing unilateral mastication for two and four months. After inducing unilateral mastication for two and four months, the anterior and the posterior points of the glenoid fossae of non-masticatory sides in experimental groups became closer to the midline by comparison with masticatory sides as well as the same sides in control groups. Locations of glenoid fossae in masticatory sides showed no changes in comparison with the same side of the control groups. CONCLUSION: The forward and inward remodeling of the glenoid fossae can be observed after unilateral mastication was induce to the non-masticatory sides of experimental rats. It is concluded that unilateral mastication might be one of the etiologic factor of temporomandibular joint disorders.

The anchorage quality of mini-implants towards translatory and extrusive forces.

AIM: The objective of the present experimental animal study was to investigate the stability of mini-implants (submersion depth 4 mm, Ø 3.3 mm) for orthodontic anchorage. Additionally the histomorphologic effects of orthodontic loading were to be analyzed, especially with regard to the activity and location of periimplant osteodynamic reactions. MATERIAL AND METHOD: 16 titanium implants (Orthosystem, Straumann, Waldenburg, Switzerland) were inserted in edentulous areas of the upper and lower jaw of four foxhounds. After a 6-month healing period the fixtures were loaded with extrusive forces (50 cN) in group 1, and with translatory forces (200 cN) in group 2. The osteodynamic changes during the 6-month force application period were documented using stains with calcium affinity (polychrome sequential labeling). The histologic analysis comprised: microsection method, fluorescence microscopy, toluidine blue staining, histomorphometry. RESULTS: All osseointegrated implants were stable throughout the test period. With respect to the apposition lines, the histomorphometric analysis showed more distinct osteodynamic activity in extrusively loaded than in translatorily loaded implants. The activity was more pronounced in the marginal area than in intermediate and apical implant areas. The extent of peri-implant remodeling activity was up to 980 micro m after extrusive loading and 300-700 microm after translatory loading. CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that even mini-implants are suited to orthodontic anchorage tasks. The question of the required minimum size of orthodontic anchorage implants remains unanswered.
