Titanium balanitis with phimosis.

Abstract

We report the 2nd case of titanium balanitis reported in the world literature. Clinically the patient presented with phimosis: histologically the titanium was surrounded by a mixed granulomatous inflammatory reaction. Topical titanium preparations may lead to phimosis and therefore we thought it important to bring this potential iatrogenic complication to further notice.

Balanitis and balanoposthitis.

Balanitis is an inflammation of the glans penis. There are several etiologic agents, including bacterial and yeast infections, parasitic infestations, and trauma or irritants. Plasma-cell balanitis and balanitis xerotica obliterans are two distinct clinical entities. The authors review the clinical and pathologic features and the treatment options for these conditions.

Group A beta-hemolytic streptococcal balanitis: it may be more common than you think.

Group A beta-hemolytic Streptococcus can cause balanitis in prepubertal males, and its incidence is probably greater than previously reported in the pediatric literature. We suggest the routine inclusion of a GABHS-selective culture in any case where a discharge or irritation is present on the glans or foreskin, especially if a recent streptococcal infection has been documented, whether or not sexual abuse is being considered. Finally, we hope to stimulate interest for further in-depth study of balanitis caused by GABHS.
