Bipolar diathermy forceps with automatic irrigation. Technical note.

Abstract

A method for providing a saline drip during bipolar diathermy is described. Stainless steel tubing is incorporated in both blades of standard bipolar forceps and connected to the irrigating line. Irrigation is started when the forceps are closed and is stopped when they are open.

Understanding submucosal electrosurgery for the treatment of nasal turbinate enlargement.

The surgical management of inferior turbinate enlargement is controversial. Submucosal electrosurgical techniques for turbinate reduction include conventional diathermy, radiofrequency tissue reduction and coblation. All electrosurgical techniques use radiofrequency electricity to damage turbinate tissue but differ in the control and delivery of energy. This review will examine the history of submucosal electrosurgery and clarify the various techniques. This review will also examine the evidence for the efficacy and safety of electrosurgery for the treatment of nasal turbinate enlargement, and will make a case that no progress will be made in clinical trials on the safety and efficacy unless there is standardisation of equipment and techniques in nasal electrosurgery.

Measurement of the specific heat capacity of liver phantom.

Phantoms are often used to simulate tissue during the development, testing and calibration of medical devices. In order to infer the specific absorption rate (SAR) and resistive heating in phantoms from temperature measurements, the specific heat capacity and density of the phantom are needed. Stauffer et al (2003 Int. J. Hyperth. 19 89-101) developed several phantoms that mimic dielectric properties of liver tissue at 915 MHz. However, thermal properties of the phantoms were not presented. We have measured specific heat capacities and densities for these phantoms. We also present dielectric properties for these phantoms measured from 0.7 to 20 GHz, including 2.45 GHz--a commonly used frequency for microwave hyperthermia and ablation.
