Pressure changes in varicose veins.

Abstract

Pressures in the superficial leg veins of 24 patients with varicose veins and 6 normal controls were studied. In the controls there was no rise in pressure in the veins on increasing the intra-abdominal pressure, but in the patients with varicose veins pressure rose significantly. Squatting was no better than sitting in preventing transmission of intra-abdominal pressure to the leg veins. It was concluded that the difference in the positions adopted for defaecation is not the cause of the wide variation in the geographical distribution of varicose veins.

A new method for electromyography of the female urethra.

A newly developed catheter enables the introduction of fine wire electrodes into the urethral striated sphincter muscle at predetermined locations and depths. Because of FET-probes electrode wires can be short, thus the signals show minimal artifacts owing to cable movement. The technique 1) facilitates registration of signals during coughing, walking, micturition and other activities, 2) is simple to perform and painless to the patient, 3) can be done by inexperienced personnel and 4) provides assurance that the electrodes are in the urethral sphincter muscle.

Primary hemangiopericytoma of lung: radiography and pathology.

Two cases of primary hemangiopericytoma of the lung are reported. The massive tumors had radiographic features of round or oval contour, homogeneous opacity, well circumscribed smooth outline without calcification, and no compression of the surrounding lung tissue. They were rather homogeneous histologically, well encapsulated, and centrally located, but extended peripherally by replacement, instead of compression, of the pulmonary parenchyma. Review of the literature about 34 other cases suggests these are the usual characteristics of primary hemangiopericytomas of the lungs.
