Organic brain dysfunction and the difficult patient.

Abstract

Sixteen patients considered "difficult" by the staff of a family practice center were matched for age and sex with sixteen "average" patients, and both groups were tested on two standard indicators of organic brain dysfunction. Both groups of patients showed abnormal impairment of visual-motor coordination, with greater impairment among the difficult patients. Difficult patients showed significantly greater impairment of verbal abstract reasoning, indicating problems with cognitive skills. These findings suggest the presence of organic brain dysfunction among the difficult patients, yet none carried a diagnostic listing or hypothesis of organicity. With the current emphasis upon the "biopsychosocial" medical model, patients with organic brain impairment may be mislabeled with psychiatric or psychosocial diagnoses.

The Bender-Gestalt II.

In 2003, the Bender-Gestalt II was published. In the present article, the revision process is described, and major changes to the test are discussed. These changes include additional designs, a memory (recall) phase, Motor and Perception supplementary tests, a detailed observation form, a global scoring system, and a large, nationally representative normative base. Directions for future research are also provided.

Comparison of visual motor development in Hong Kong and the USA assessed on the Qualitative Scoring System for the Modified Bender-Gestalt test.

This study compared the visuomotor development of young children in Hong Kong and the USA assessed on the Qualitative Scoring System for the Modified Bender-Gestalt test. 744 children aged 4:6 to 8:5 years from 6 kindergartens and 6 primary schools in Hong Kong were administered the Modified Bender-Gestalt test. The Qualitative Scoring System was used to measure the children's visuomotor development. Their visuomotor scores were then compared with norms for children in the USA. Analysis indicated significant differences across all age groups of 4:6 to 8:5 years in 6-mo. units. Consistent with previous research, children in Hong Kong outperformed their western peers. Percentile scores and T scores for children in Hong Kong in each age group were reported.
