Dose distribution around a new flexible afterloading applicator.

Abstract

A new afterloading applicatory, together with a computer program, is described. A comparison of the calculated and measured dose distribution around different applicators shows that in the future the described computer program can be used. The development of the new applicator and the computer program increases the flexibility of possible dose distribution.

Concentration and vertical distribution of 137Cs in the undisturbed soil of southwestern Nigeria.

The results of measurements of 137Cs in soil profiles that were sampled in undisturbed soil in Ondo, Ekiti, and Oyo states in the southwestern area of Nigeria are presented in this paper. Samples were collected from nine soil profiles. The vertical distributions of 137Cs in the soil profiles have been determined. Cesium concentration ranged from 0.31 +/- 0.10 Bq kg(-1) in the 0-2 cm depth to a maximum of 1.25 +/- 0.21 Bq kg(-1) in the 6-8 cm depth at some sites and from 3.16 +/- 0.16 Bq kg(-1) in 0-5 cm depth to below detection limit (BDL) at 20-25 cm at another site. 137Cs total deposition in 0-10 cm depth was found to be greatest at Ikogosi site with a value of 90.30 Bq m(-2). The results generally showed that more than 40 y after the first nuclear weapon tests, 137Cs still remains within the 25 cm upper layer of soil in the region with a migration velocity of 0.17-0.18 cm y(-1). The mean value of effective dose commitment due to the presence of cesium in soil in the entire region was found to be 10.77 microSv.

Effects of ageing and microbial component on chemical availability of (137)Cs in a long-term experimental site.

A loamy soil contaminated with (137)CsCl 40 years ago was investigated by a sequential extraction technique to determine the effect of ageing on chemical availability of (137)Cs. The soil samples were sequentially extracted with H(2)O, NH(4)Ac, NH(2)OH x HCl, H(2)O(2), and HNO(3). Extractability of (137)Cs decreased in the order: HNO(3) > Residual > H(2)O(2) > NH(4)Ac > NH(2)OH x HCl > H(2)O. Only 0.94% in labile fractions (H(2)O and NH(4)Ac), while more than 96% was found in the strongly bound fraction (HNO(3) and residual). However, the activity percentage in labile fractions was increased to 1.34% after autoclaving treatment, while those in the other fractions did not significantly differ. This indicates that the microbial activity played a role in the (137)Cs retention. In the subsequent pot experiments with ryegrass and leek, specific activities in both plants were significantly higher in autoclaved soil than in non-autoclaved soil, and uptake of (137)Cs in the five cuts by ryegrass was 25% of the labile (137)Cs in the soil. In addition, a positive correlation was found between the amount of (137)Cs in labile fractions and that by plant uptake.

Plutonium isotopes derived from Nagasaki atomic bomb in the sediment of Nishiyama reservoir at Nagasaki, Japan.

The source of plutonium in sediments deposited at Nishiyama reservoir at Nagasaki was characterized by their (240)Pu/(239)Pu atom ratio. The average ratio was approximately 0.03, except in two layers. The main source of the plutonium was the Nagasaki atomic bomb. The plutonium continues to flow into the reservoir even now. The (240)Pu/(239)Pu atom ratios in two layers were higher than the average, which showed that plutonium in these layers were made of those of nuclear tests added to those of the atomic bomb.
