Intermittent catheterization in neurogenic bladder dysfunction.

Abstract

Experience with intermittent catheterization in 449 patients with traumatic cord bladder during a 9-year period is presented. There were 317 patients who were discharged from the hospital free of the catheter and maintain balanced bladder function on long-term followup. Of these catheter-free patients 45 per cent have sterile urine at any one time. Intermittent catheterization is the method of choice to establish a catheter-free state and reduce infection among spinal cord injury patients. It is a useful conservative method in long-term therapy of patients with non-traumatic neurogenic bladder dysfunction.

[Transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic stent shunt (TIPSS) with use of Rösch-Uchida transjugular liver access set--evaluation by CT and its clinical application].

Appropriateness of the Rösch-Uchida transjugular liver access set designed for TIPSS procedure was confirmed, especially about the catheter angle and effective length of the 20 G puncture needle, by CT analysis on three dimensional vascular anatomy of the liver. Clinically, TIPSS using the set was successfully made for two patients, connecting superior right hepatic vein with right portal vein in one patient and middle hepatic vein with left portal vein in another patient with hypoplastic right portal vein. Prior to TIPSS procedure, verification of vascular anatomy on CT images is the key to success of TIPSS in safe.

[Testing an ultrasonic scanner for determination of urinary bladder volume].

Bladderscan BVI 2000 is a portable ultrasound scanner, specially constructed for determination of bladder volume. We have tested this scanner for accuracy, systematic errors and the training required to use it. The bladder volumes measured by ultrasound scanning were compared with the true volumes. Fifty-six measurements were made. We found the accuracy of BVI 2000 sufficient to determine bladder volumes as either small or large. We found no systematic errors. No special training is required to use the scanner. The device is thus useful in most clinical situations when greater accuracy than indicated here is not necessary.
