[Problems in coping with intractable bacterial infections].
Abstract
The development of new antimicrobial agents has succeeded to overcome most of the bacterial infections. However, the success has, at the same time, accompanied with the increase of intractable infections by drug-resistant pathogens such as methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus or multi-drug resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis. To cope with these infections, we have to settle quite a lot of problems. In this paper, we described these problems adopting chronic respiratory tract infection as an example. The problems discussed here are (1) determination of causative agent, (2) dynamics of bacterial flora, and (3) pathogenic role of extracellular protease from Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
