Types of faculty development programs.

Abstract

This paper offers an overview of faculty development program types, with references to specific programs described in the recent literature. Faculty development programs have been categorized in a number of ways. This review uses a variation of those typologies and suggests six types of faculty development activities: 1) organizational strategies, 2) fellowships, 3) comprehensive local programs, 4) workshops and seminars, 5) continuing medical education, and 6) individual activities. While these categories provide a conceptual basis for distinguishing among programs, actual programs in use often contain elements of more than on type.

Myco-Ed: Mycological curriculum for education and discovery.

Fungi are important and hyperdiverse organisms, yet chronically understudied. Most fungal clades have no reference genomes, impeding our understanding of their ecosystem functions and use as solutions in health and biotechnology. Also, opportunities for training in fungal biology and genomics are lacking, creating a bottleneck that hinders the recruitment and cultivation of a talented future mycological workforce. To address these issues, we developed Myco-Ed, an educational program offering training and scientific contributions through genome sequencing and analysis. Myco-Ed empowers students to pursue careers in fungal biology while improving fungal resources. Myco-Ed has been piloted at 12 institutions (15 classrooms) ranging from online e-Campuses to R1 universities, resulting in hundreds of fungal observations and many new high-quality reference genomes.

The Taskforce 2000 survey on medical education in sleep and sleep disorders.

Previous research has shown evidence of a widening gap between scientific research and clinical teaching in sleep and sleep disorders. To address the deficiencies in current medical education in sleep, the Taskforce 2000 was established by the American Sleep Disorders Association. The present study was undertaken to assess the teaching activities, needs and interests of the membership of the two largest professional sleep societies (American Sleep Disorders Association and Sleep Research Society). Survey instruments included a brief, 5-item postcard survey, which was mailed to all members, followed by an in-depth, 34-item questionnaire, which was completed by 158 respondents from the intitial postcard survey (N = 808). Results indicated that the majority of respondents (65.2%) are currently involved in teaching sleep to medical students or postgraduate trainees, although the average amount of teaching time was only 2.1 hours for undergraduate and 4.8 hours for graduate education in sleep. Teaching of sleep laboratory procedures and clinical evaluation of sleep-disordered patients is limited at either an undergraduate or postgraduate level. The major deficiencies noted were the lack of time in the medical curriculum and the need for better resources and teaching facilities. A large majority of respondents indicated their willingness to be involved in sleep education for physicians, and rated this a high priority for the professional organization.
