Image processing in forensic pathology.

Abstract

Image processing applications in forensic pathology are becoming increasingly important. This article introduces basic concepts in image processing as applied to problems in forensic pathology in a non-mathematical context. Discussions of contrast enhancement, digital encoding, compression, deblurring, and other topics are presented.

["Self-inflicted injuries"--psychiatric, forensic and insurance aspects (II)].

German law distinguishes between attempted suicide which is not punishable and self-mutilation which is prohibited. This article describes the historical development of self-injurious behaviour, reviews the social, juridical, and ethical assessments of the past, and examines the statistical and biological results of current research. It relates observations from forensic medicine and psychiatry to specific clinical symptoms, toxicological circumstances, and social influences (stress incurred by everyday life, war, or imprisonment). Drawing on pertinent cases, it clarifies criminal and civil jurisdiction and emphasizes the importance of self-mutilation for private insurers. Intended for insurers, forensic scientists, and psychiatrists, recommendations concern the procedures to be followed in the examination, jurisdiction, and therapy involving cases of self-inflicted injuries.

Anatomical variability of the frontal sinuses and their application in forensic identification.

The uniqueness of anatomical structures and their variations provides the basis for forensic identification of unknown deceased persons. Similar to fingerprints, each frontal sinus is so distinctive and unique that the chances of two individuals having the same morphology of the frontal sinuses is extremely remote. Radiographs, especially the occipitomental view commonly used in the assessment of paranasal pathology, provide excellent records of these sinuses. The case illustrated here is an application of the frontal sinus identification of a victim in a mass disaster.
