A framework for advanced practice nursing.

Abstract

The empirical and expository literatures about advanced nursing practice have lacked a broad, comprehensive, conceptual framework to organize and guide substantive work. Such a framework is needed during the development of health care policy, educational curricula, role descriptions, and research agendas for this arena of practice. The framework proposed in this article represents an integrative synthesis of previous work on advanced nursing practice. The proposed framework is based on the definition of advanced practice nursing as professional health care activities that (1) focus on clinical services rendered at the nurse-client interface, (2) use a nursing orientation, (3) have a defined but dynamic and evolving scope, and (4) are based on competencies that are acquired through graduate nursing education. Advanced practice nursing is comprised of activities in the domains of advanced clinical practice, health care systems management, and professional involvement in broad health care discourse.

Myco-Ed: Mycological curriculum for education and discovery.

Fungi are important and hyperdiverse organisms, yet chronically understudied. Most fungal clades have no reference genomes, impeding our understanding of their ecosystem functions and use as solutions in health and biotechnology. Also, opportunities for training in fungal biology and genomics are lacking, creating a bottleneck that hinders the recruitment and cultivation of a talented future mycological workforce. To address these issues, we developed Myco-Ed, an educational program offering training and scientific contributions through genome sequencing and analysis. Myco-Ed empowers students to pursue careers in fungal biology while improving fungal resources. Myco-Ed has been piloted at 12 institutions (15 classrooms) ranging from online e-Campuses to R1 universities, resulting in hundreds of fungal observations and many new high-quality reference genomes.

Self-directed learning in population health. a clinically relevant approach for medical students.

BACKGROUND: In this article, we describe the education model used to integrate population health learning into a new 4-year medical program at the University of Sydney. METHOD: Our two-pronged approach aims to prepare third-year students to integrate population health thinking into their day-to-day clinical reasoning and to equip them with skills to investigate specific population health topics. We provide an example of a student-led, small-group session on health issues for disadvantaged populations, along with an outline of our assessment and evaluation methods. This innovative course illustrates one approach to the challenge of motivating students to bridge the gap between their interest in the medical care of individual patients and the healthcare needs of whole populations. RESULTS/CONCLUSIONS: Students performed adequately in the assessments required for progression to the next year of the program. Students rated the case-based exercises; self-directed learning; on-line and library resources; tutor facilitation; and student-led, small-group sessions as effective methods for learning.
