[Electrolytic eye-lash epilation with the operating microscope (author's transl)].

Abstract

A modified technique of epilation by electrolysis is reported. Epilation is hereby performed under the operating microscope. Contrary to the original method, with this technique the eyelash is firstly removed and then the hair canal is sounded with a fine wire under corresponding magnification. After the circuit is closed, white foam is formed and subsequently the hair papilla and the hair follicle are destroyed. The technique has several advantages compared to the original method: 1. It is relatively harmless to tissue. 2. Larger areas of abberant cilia may be epilated in one session as confluent necroses do not occur. 3. The risk of cilia again growing is reduced as the hair follicle and hair papilla are destroyed with high certainty.

Impact of electrokinetic remediation on microbial communities within PCP contaminated soil.

Electrokinetic techniques have been used to stimulate the removal of organic pollutants within soil, by directing contaminant migration to where remediation may be more easily achieved. The effect of this and other physical remediation techniques on the health of soil microbial communities has been poorly studied and indeed, largely ignored. This study reports the impact on soil microbial communities during the application of an electric field within ex situ laboratory soil microcosms contaminated with pentachlorophenol (PCP; 100mg kg(-1) oven dry soil). Electrokinetics reduced counts of culturable bacteria and fungi, soil microbial respiration and carbon substrate utilisation, especially close to the acidic anode where PCP accumulated (36d), perhaps exacerbated by the greater toxicity of PCP at lower soil pH. There is little doubt that a better awareness of the interactions between soil electrokinetic processes and microbial communities is key to improving the efficacy and sustainability of this remediation strategy.

Optimization of the electrocoagulation process for the removal of copper, lead and cadmium in natural waters and simulated wastewater.

Chemical, electrochemical and flow variables were optimized to examine the effectiveness of the electrocoagulation process for the removal of copper, lead and cadmium. The electrochemical process, which uses electrodes of commercial laminate steel, was applied to simulated wastewater containing 12 mg dm(-3) of copper, 4 mg dm(-3) of lead and 4 mg dm(-3) of cadmium. The optimum conditions for the process were identified as pH=7, flow rate=6.3 cm(3) min(-1) and a current density between 31 and 54 A m(-2). When the electrode geometric area and time of electrolysis reached critical values, the copper removal reached a maximum value of 80%. A linear relationship was identified between the current density and the mass of generated sludge. In addition, a linear relationship was found between specific energy consumption and current density. The results of this investigation provide important data for the development of an industrial-scale electrolytic reactor.

Electrolysis as an efficient key step in the homogeneous polymer-supported synthesis of N-substituted pyrroles.

[reaction: see text]. An efficient and general route to the soluble polymer-assisted synthesis of a set of 14 different N-substituted pyrroles using dendritic polyglycerol as a high-loading support is presented. The transformation of furan to the key intermediate 2,5-dialkoxytetrahydrofuran was performed by electrochemical oxidation followed by catalytic hydrogenation with Pt/C in high yield. Both reactions required heterogeneous reagents which can be conveniently used with polyglycerol as a soluble support.
