Phenoxyacetic acids: separation and quantitative determination.

Abstract

The various chromatographic methods suitable for the separation and quantitative determination of phenoxyalkyl acid herbicides in environmental samples are reviewed, with special emphasis being placed on sample preparation methods such as liquid-liquid, solid-phase and supercritical fluid extractions. Techniques are classified (high-performance liquid chromatography, gas-liquid chromatography, capillary zone electrophoresis, micellar electrokinetic chromatography) and discussed separately. The advantages and disadvantages of the various preparation and separation methods and their combinations are evaluated.

Preparation of Fe3O4-C18 nano-magnetic composite materials and their cleanup properties for organophosphorous pesticides.

Magnetic Fe3O4-C18 composite nanoparticles of approximately 5-10 nm in size were synthesized and characterized by IR spectroscopy, atomic absorption spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy. The magnetic Fe3O4-C18 composite nanoparticles were applied for cleanup and enrichment of organophosphorous pesticides. Comparative studies were carried out between magnetic Fe3O4-C18 composite nanoparticles and common C18 materials. Residues of organophosphorous pesticides were determined by gas chromatography in combination with a nitrogen/phosphorus detector. The cleanup and enrichment properties of magnetic Fe3O4-C18 composite nanoparticles are comparable with those of common C18 materials for enrichment of organophosphorous pesticides, but the cleanup and enrichment are faster and easier to perform.

Photoinduced generation of 2,3-butanedione from riboflavin.

The volatile compound formation from riboflavin solution of a phosphate buffer (0.1 M, pH 6.5) under light for 15 h was studied by SPME-GC and SPME-GC/MS analysis. Only one major compound in the riboflavin solution was formed and increased as the light exposure time increased. The light-exposed riboflavin solution had a buttery odor. The compound of riboflavin solution under light was analyzed by gas chromatography and olfactometry. The major volatile compound eluted from the gas chromatograph had a buttery odor. The buttery odor compound was positively identified as 2,3-butanedione by a combination of gas chromatographic retention time, mass spectrum, and odor evaluation of authentic 2,3-butanedione. The addition of sodium azide, a singlet oxygen quencher, to riboflavin solution minimized the formation of the buttery odor compound. Singlet oxygen was involved in the formation of the buttery odor. The 2,3-butanedione was produced from the reaction between riboflavin and singlet oxygen. Singlet oxygen was formed from triplet oxygen by riboflavin photosensitization mechanism. This is the first reported oxidation reaction between riboflavin and singlet or triplet in food and biological systems.

Multiresidue method for determination of 35 pesticides in virgin olive oil by using liquid-liquid extraction techniques coupled with solid-phase extraction clean up and gas chromatography with nitrogen phosphorus detection and electron capture detection.

A method for the multiresidue determination of 35 pesticides (30 insecticides and five herbicides) in olive oil by gas chromatography (GC) is described. Three liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) procedures based on (i) partition of pesticides between acetonitrile (ACN) and oil solution in n-hexane, (ii) partition of pesticides between saturated ACN with n-hexane and oil solution in n-hexane saturated with ACN, and (iii) partition of pesticides between ACN and oil were tested for the optimization of the highest pesticide recoveries with the lowest oil residue in the final extracts. Experimental tests were preformed in order to study the efficiency of different clean up procedures with N-Alumina, Florisil, C18, and ENVI-Carb solid-phase extraction (SPE) cartridges for the compounds analyzed by GC-nitrogen phosphorus detection. A second step of clean up was also performed for the compounds analyzed by GC-electron capture detection (ECD), by using phenyl-bonded silica (Ph), diol-bonded silica (Diol), cyanopropyl-bonded silica (CN), and amino propyl-bonded silica (NH2) SPE cartridges. LLE of the oil solution in hexane with ACN followed by an ENVI-Carb SPE clean up of the extract gave the best results for all target compounds. The ACN extract was additionally cleaned through a Diol-SPE cartridge for the determination of pesticides analyzed mainly by GC-ECD. Pesticide recoveries form virgin olive oil spiked with 20, 100, and 500 microg/kg concentrations of pesticides ranged from 70.9 to 107.4%. The proposed method featured good sensitivity, pesticide quantification limits were low enough, and the precision, expressed as relative standard deviation, ranged from 2.4 to 12.0%. The proposed method was applied successfully for the residue determination of the selected pesticides in commercial olive oil samples.
