[Tobacco abuse in adolescents].

The existing literature on smoking among young people in the Federal Republic of Germany is reviewed. Smoking is spread differently among the German youths, varying from place to place. Smoking is more widely spread in the cities than in the country. It is spread more widely in the commerce schools than in other schools. The boys smoke more often and more heavily than the girls. The difference between the two sexes is greater in the country than in the cities. As a rule, the young people smoke filter cigarettes with medium strong tobacco. The majority of the school students smoke less than five cigarettes per day.

[Clandestine places: illegal sale of alcohol for urban worker populations].

The authors have studied the illegal commerce of alcohol in popular urban communities. This sale is done in so called clandestine places. The study was approached from a cultural-anthropological point of view and its objective is a descriptive-exploratory study based on observation and interview techniques. A definition and a tipology of these places was attempted, emphasizing group dynamics and interpersonal relations between the owner of the place and the customer; among the customers; among the place itself and the rest of the community organizations, formal and informal ones. A primary analysis was done, according to which these clandestine places appear legitimized by nets of interpersonal relations, critical economic situations and places that satisfy recreational needs of the inhabitants. In order to eliminate the former, adecuate substitutes for recreation and social interaction ought to be considered.

[Nuclear DNA synthesis rate and labelling index: effects of carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic chemicals on its behaviour in the organism of growing CBA-mice. The thymidine-incorporation-screening-system (TSS) (author's transl)].

During the last few decades there has been an extraordinary accumulation of man-made chemicals in the human environment. There is a growing consensus in oncology that a large proportion of human cancers are environmental in origin by exposure of man to such carcinogenic chemicals. These chemicals in the majority of all cases have not been tested to prove their carcinogenicity. Testing of new chemical compounds is needful prior to their introduction into commerce, foods, agriculture or the working places to prevent human cancer. To test such a large number of possibly carcinogenic chemicals, economical and rapidly practicable bioassays are necessary. In the following we compare some well known bioassays with our autoradiographic thymidine-incorporation-screening-system and other assays based on biochemical quantification of DNA synthesis as parameter for identification of carcinogenic substances. The partial inhibition of the whole DNA synthesis in a proliferating cell population after treatment with toxic and carcinogenic chemicals is an early common response especially in hepatectomized animal, livers caused by the effects of those substances. However, by quantitative evaluation of the nuclear DNA synthesis rate as a basic parameter using autoradiographs of kidney and liver of juvenile growing CBA-mice, it is possible to differentiate carcinogenic from non-carcinogenic chemicals by means of silver grain counting after 3H-TdR incorporation. Contrarily the "whole DNA synthesis" expressed by the percentual 3H-labelling index of kidney and liver did not permit such a differentiation in our experimental arrangement. We could demonstrate that carcinogenic compounds of different chemical classes partially inhibit the nuclear DNA synthesis rate significantly over a time period longer than 24 hours. The tested non-carcinogenic compounds did not show this suppressive effect on the nuclear DNA synthesis rate.

[Present situation and future prospects for epidemiological surveillance within the framework of Quebec new health system (author's transl)].

Epidemiological surveillance in Quebec is part of the integral system of this activity throughout the whole of Canada and the United States. Since surveillance is aimed mainly at the ecosystem of the disease rather than just the cases, the activities are insured from the horizontal point of view by several organisations, aided by various Ministeries (health, agriculture, industry and commerce). The vertical structure (besides the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta as coordinator) includes the federal Laboratory Centre for Disease Control, its epidemiology and surveillance bureaus, as well as its territorial epidemiologists, provincial epidemiologists and their teams. Quebec has recently been given a new health structure, introduced in conjunction with the traditional organisations by the new Departments of Community Health, and the Social Centres of Community Services. This structure which is new to North America is characterised mostly by its close integration with community health. Moreover, it represents an excellent opportunity for developing an epidemiological surveillance complementary to local problems and for heightening their responsibility.

[Disinfection of sewage waters from rendering plants by means by peracetic acid].

In our experiments, peracetic acid -- known in commerce as "Wolfasteril" was tested as a new and efficient disinfectant to disinfect sewage waters from rendering plants. Peracetic acid was used in experiments in concentration of 0.1 to 1.0% for 30 sec. to 60 min. As a comparative agent, 5% chloramine was used. Results obtained in preliminary and main experiments proved that peracetic acid is fully appropriate to disinfect biologically cleaned sewage waters in rendering plants. Sewage waters supplying the main stream has to pass mostly a short section after having left the water clariflier. Consequently, the concentration of 1% peracetic acid acting for 30 sec. is the optimum one. The recommendation of this application norm for peracetic acid in water clarifiers from rendering plants being at least suitable in controlling disasters.

Metrication and AIHA.

AIHA supports a planned orderly national program for conversion to the metric system and will cooperate with other technical societies and organizations in implementing this voluntary conversion. The Association will use the International System of Units (SI) as modified by the Secretary of Commerce for use in the United States in all official publications, papers and documents. U.S. customary units can be presented in parentheses following the appropriate SI unit, when it is necessary for clarity.

Balance sheet for phosphorus in the UK.

A balance sheet for the inputs, uses and outputs of phosphorus in the UK economy has been drawn up. The major import is fertilizer, amounting to about 200 kt P per year. After fertilizers, the other imports (in kt P) are in animal feeds (63), detergents (38) and human food (14). The major outputs are sewage (50), animal excreta (26) and refuse (21); soil losses are about 20 kt. The flowpaths for phosphorus through humans, animals and plants are described. The discrepancy of about 210 kt P/yr is explained by the fact that the amount of phosphorus in the soil increases each year by almost as much as the amount of fertilizer phosphorus added. In view of UK dependence on this imported resource it is suggested that priority is given to work which might eventually have some practical application in preventing or reversing the immobilization of phosphorus in the soil.

Comprehensive community mental health center- business community relationship: a reexamination.

In this paper the belief that nonprofit service organizations and profit-motivated organizations should function separately from each other is questioned. Several of the advantages inherent from a cooperative relationship between comprehensive community mental health centers and the business community for the worker, mental health professional, comprehensive community mental health center, and business are discussed. Possible negative emotional responses against this new alliance are presented and dispelled. A joint effort between comprehensive community mental health centers and the business community is anticipated to develop with the common goal being the promotion of mental health.

Environmental and food contamination with PCB's in Japan.

In Japan "yusho", i.e., poisoning caused by ingestion of rice oil contaminated with PCB's, broke out in October 1968, and produced more than 1200 officially certified cases. Nevertheless, it was only regarded as a kind of food poisoning and its connection with environmental and biological contamination was only imperfectly taken into consideration. Finally, in the autumn of 1970, two study groups, from the Ehime University and the Kyoto City Hygienic Institute, reported on the PCB contamination of salt water and fresh water fishes in Japan. Subsequently many reports about PCB's as an environmental contaminant have been published by several study groups throughout Japan, and nowadays the PCB polluted state of Japan has become rather clearly recognized. This report will present information on environmental, food and human contamination with PCB's in Japan especially also in some typically contaminated local areas, in addition to summarizing some overall aspects of the PCB problem in Japan (e.g., the production, shipment and use of PCB's).

Branded packaging raises likelihood of cigarette purchasing in an experimental retail setting by increasing craving.

INTRODUCTION: Exposure to branded cigarette packaging in retail settings has been shown to be associated with purchasing behavior, but the mechanisms underlying this effect are unclear. This study tested whether cigarette craving and perceived health harms mediate the effect of branded packaging on cigarette purchasing in a simulated retail environment. METHODS: Young adults aged 21-34 who currently smoke cigarettes (n = 290) completed an experimental shopping task in the RAND StoreLab, a life-sized replica of a convenience store. Participants were randomly assigned to one of two conditions: (1) branding present, in which branded cigarette packages were displayed; and (2) branding absent condition, in which branded elements were removed and packages were standardized in a brown-green color and uniform text. Cigarette purchases were recorded, and participants completed post-shopping measures of cigarette craving and perceived health harms. Causal effect decomposition analyses were used to assess whether these variables mediated the effect of study condition on the likelihood of purchasing cigarettes. RESULTS: Craving, but not perceived health harms, partially mediated the effect of branded packaging on cigarette purchasing. Exposure to branded packs increased the likelihood of purchasing by elevating craving (average mediated effect = 2.4%, 95% CI 0.2% - 5.0%, p = .03). CONCLUSIONS: Branded cigarette packaging appears to increase cigarette purchasing at least in part by increasing cigarette craving at point of sale. Interventions that address craving management in retail settings (e.g., just-in-time interventions, prn nicotine replacement therapy) may help mitigate the impact of branding on young adults' cigarette purchasing.
