The limonoid triterpene, obacunone, was found to enhance the cytotoxicity of vincristine against L1210 cells by approximately 10-fold. Further, it was found that the cytotoxicity of other microtubule inhibitors such as vinblastine and taxol in drug-sensitive KB-3-1 cells as well as in multidrug-resistant KB-V1 cells was enhanced greatly in the presence of obacunone. On the other hand, there was no remarkable potentiating effect of obacunone on the cytotoxicity of other antineoplastic drugs such as adriamycin, cisplatin or 5-fluorouracil. From these results, it is implied that the potentiating action of obacunone may be limited to microtubule inhibitors.

Aqueous extracts of some plants belonging to the Lamiaceae family (Sideritis montana, Origanum dictamnus, Mentha piperita, Rosmarinus officinallis and Origanum marjorana) caused an important increase of the lag time of Yarrowia lipolytica. Especially, Origanum dictamnus and Rosmarinus officinallis extracts enhanced the lag time considerably and influenced negatively the specific growth rate of this yeast. In culture media having low C/N ratio, all plant extracts caused an increase of the biomass produced in relation to glucose and nitrogen consumed, while, in high C/N ratio media the effect of the extracts on biomass production was negative. In the presence of aqueous plant extracts, in low C/N ratio culture media, the ratio sigma unsaturated/sigma saturated fatty acids in the cellular lipids increased, whereas in high C/N ratio media it decreased.
Dictamnine, a furoquinoline alkaloid of the Rutaceae plant family, has been shown to be mutagenic and phototoxic in bacteria and yeasts. Here, we have investigated the phototoxic effect of dictamnine in human Jurkat T cells and HaCaT keratinocytes. Dictamnine was isolated from the roots of DICTAMNUS ALBA L. and was photoactivated with solar simulated radiation, delivered from a 1000-W xenon arc lamp with a maximal output between 300 - 800 nm. Dictamnine displayed concentration- and light-dependent phototoxic effects in both cell lines. In comparison to the structurally related furocoumarins 5-methoxypsoralen and 8-methoxypsoralen, dictamnine was less phototoxic. Nevertheless, it may play a major role in the elicitation of phytophotodermatitis because of its abundance in plants of the Rutaceae family.
The most well-known cause of phytophotodermatitis in Denmark is accidental contact with plants belonging to the Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), such as hodgweed (Heracleum spondylium). However, many other plants with furocoumarins (psoralens) may induce the same kind of reaction. We describe a case of phytophotodermatitis caused by Dictamnus alba, gas plant or burning bush also known from the Bible as the "burning bush of Moses".
OBJECTIVE: To make an attempt at the multi-element speciation in the Chinese medicinal herbs by determining the concentrations of 25 elements in different extraction solutions. METHOD: Firstly, five Chinese medicinal herbs (Buddleja officinalis, Dictamnus dasycarpus, Myristica fragrans, Albizia judibrissin and Inula japonica) from the same region of China were treated to obtain water-soluble phase, lipid-soluble phase and non-soluble phase by water extraction, organic solvent extraction and acid digestion, respectively. Secondly, Phytolacca acinosa, a Chinese medicinal herb collected from 9 regions of China, was extracted by 0% EtOH, 50% EtOH, 75% EtOH, 95% EtOH, respectively, referring the Chinese Pharmacopoeia. Finally, the concentrations of 25 elements, such as Be, Cr, Cu, Zn, Ge, Sr, Y, Mo, Cd, Tl, Pb and REEs, in the above three phases were determined by ICP-MS. RESULT: Under the optimal conditions, all the 25 elements could be determined with detection limits ranged from 0.003 to 0.71 ng x g(-1). The average recoveries of the elements in P. acinosa were 88% approximately 119%, with the relative standard deviations 1.7% approximately 13.3%. It was observed that the determined 25 elements distributed in all the water-soluble, lipid-soluble and non-soluble phases, indicating that the inorganic species, organicspecies, as well as the protein bound species were coexisted in the herbs. Big differences of the element extraction rates could be found by using different ethanol solutions. CONCLUSION: With the aid of the obtained results, we may increase the extraction of necessary elements while decrease that of the toxic elements from the herbs by choosing a suitable solvent during the drug production.
The role of antioxidants in preventing oxygen radical and hydrogen peroxide induced cytotoxicity and tissue damage in various human diseases is increasingly recognized. In this study the in vitro antioxidant activity of the ethanol extracts obtained from 21 aromatic plants belonging to the Lamiaceae family was investigated. Of the extracts tested, those of Salvia ringens, Salvia pomifera, Stachys spruneri, Origanum dictamnus, Phlomis lanata, Ballota pseudodictamnus, Ballota acetabulosa, Teucrium polium, Calamintha glandulosa and Micromeria graeca exhibited the same activity as alpha-tocopherol.
Dictyosomes are found in a large number in the glandular scales of Origanum dictamnus during the early developmental stages. Later they significantly diminish when essential oil secretion starts. Phases of dictyosome duplication are frequently observed at the stage of growth of the Golgi apparatus. The process of dictyosome division starts in the middle region of the stack where a Golgi cisterna undergoes a central dilation. An analogous dilation is progressively formed in the adjacent cisternae. Finally, by membrane fusion the stack separates into two daughter stacks which organize into normal dictyosomes.
