The biomechanics of facial bone fracture.

Selected facial bone locations were impacted to simulate clinical trauma conditions. Locations selected included the nose, zygoma, mandible, maxilla, and frontal bone. The experiment clearly delineate tolerance bands for the facial bones for both sexes. These data should permit the improved design of injury producing structures.

Biomechanical Phenomena

The management of long bone fracture in the spinal cord injured patient.

Principles of management of long bone fractures in patients with spinal cord injuries vary with the type of fracture and duration of quadriplegia. Class I fractures (acute injuries) are managed by existing principles of long bone fracture management with a tendency to open reduction and internal fixation to dispense with the necessity of plaster casts on insensate skin. Class II fractures (pathologic--osteoporotic) heal well, require minimal specific treatment, and open reduction is usually contraindicated. Class III fractures (acute injuries in chronic paraplegia) are treated with methods least likely to disrupt the patient's life style in a wheelchair. Open reduction should be used whenever there are difficulties with circular casts and traction methods.

Arm Injuries

Effects of 1alpha-hydroxycholecalciferol on osteoporotic changes induced by calcium deficiency in bone fractures in adult rats.

Adult male rats maintained on a low calcium intake during 6 weeks prefracture developed osteoporotic changes of the tibia fracture during a healing period of another 6 weeks. Treatment based on combined use of daily peroral doses of 1alpha- hydroxycholecalciferol and an optimal calcium intake reversed the osteoporotic changes in the fractured tibia after only 2 weeks, and the act of reversion became still more pronounced after 4-6 weeks. 1alpha-hydroxycholecalciferol treatment is recorded, when supported by an optimal calcium intake, to positively influence the levels of serum calcium, dry weight, and total ash content as specific weight and cortical thickness of the fractured tibia, following experimental fractures.

[Urinary excretion of hydroxyproline during the healing period of bone fractures (author's transl)].

This article refers to the total hydroxyproline excretion during the healing period of bone fractures. The hydroxyprolyne excretion is twice as high in patients with fractures than in persons in good health. Its amount depends on the localisation of the fracture and the therapy chosen as well as the age of the patient. However, no significant therapeutic conclusions can be drawn from the quantitative analysis of hydroxyproline during the healing period of the bone fracture as far as the course of stabilization of the fracture is concerned.
